How Promising Is The Future Of A Banker? by Lips1(op): 11:38pm On Jun 15, 2009
Regarding work as a banker in nigeria (marketing sector) i know what entry level salaries are from a post a read here on NL but i'd like to know what its like a year or two after entry. i know in banking one can look forward to promotions but how often is that?

Also a friend of mine took the CBN recruitment test in march and still is wondering about results. Does anyone have any news on that pls?

THANKS

Well, lets hope for better. It is becoming so alarming that u wouldnt know when and how soon one will get to the top as the top has already filled up

you'll get employed alright, but they wont promote you to the top becasue people are there, however they do transfer people on top a lot so it will be shifting till it reaches your turn another way is if the people on top retires it means you'll have to wait for like 35 years, like my uncle is overseer and bank manager of one bank in oshun state and he is 34, he'll have to be at least 60 years old before he leaves, that's what he told me.

The Future of a banker is as promising as the amount of Deposits & Profit he brings to the bank. shekina.

Even if the top is crowded, if u hammer dem with enuf cash courtesy of ur Godfathers in government or chopping from government (na where d money dey) then bliv u me u will be in the BOD sooner than u can say Okro Soup.

Everybody knows about the Fair lady in our capital city that became an unofficial ED in less than 8 years.

U need to see how the MD of the bank pampers (not alluding to any sexual kini so get ur minds outta d gutter) this honey, just so some hawk eyed mofos from rival institutions dont poach her.

Which brings my second point.
As u dey perform for ur Bank, if they fail to acknowledge & reward u, u've got 22 other options that need u.

Just my 2 kobo

You just said it. It's a very challenging career but the problem I have with banking jobs is they hardly have time for themselves let alone their families.
Re: How Promising Is The Future Of A Banker? by lojik(m): 5:44am On Jun 19, 2009
They pay u much so dat you can deliver results per time (targets) and if u cant, nothing for you.

The problem is dat the targets are unrealistic and the bank doesnt have any plan or support strategy on how you should acheive or realise you target. So bad you dont get any support from them.

Unless u r very well connected b4 you got in2 d bank, you may not have means of reaching their target ever, hence, excuse not to promote u.

Re: How Promising Is The Future Of A Banker? by oleigh(m): 7:48am On Jun 19, 2009
who dey talk about promotion?do u know dat we have labourers in the banking industry?if u be contract staff na d =N=50,000 abi =N=40,000 wey be ur salary you go collect 4 like 2years oo.den after 2years dem go put=N=10,000 4u again, and b4 dis time u go don bring ur salary for 4years to the bank with big target,is dat not slavery?
Re: How Promising Is The Future Of A Banker? by charles316: 12:33pm On Jun 19, 2009
to me ,working in d bank is a waste of ur ability.u hardly do brain work.is more of physical.i worked there for 3 months and got tired of the work (u do almost d same thing everyday) b4 i resigned and joined one of oil services firms.my guy,it depends on what u are planning for ur life.if u want to chop money jejely, then u are can go to d bank
but if u want money and i mean money for ur future, then u need to be in the engineering sector.u can ask any experienced person if what i hv told u is true.

the bank is just a mirage.been there and so i know what i am saying.

I agree with charles316.to be frank banking in nigeria is all about plus and minus.so many people were leaving the banking sector and that was why they increased the salary so that they can lure people into the job.in d long run,ur brain will be blank cos all u know is plus and minus and maybe small percentage angry

Bank talk again?

Nairalanders, una no dey tire to biff bankers?
Where is it written that you MUST work in a bank?
There are oil companies all over the country.
Embassies,telecom companies,one man businesses everywhere.
You dont have to take a banking job even if you have left school for over 10 yrs
and all you keep getting are bank offers.
Keep hoping and praying that before you are 70yrs old,God will bring you
an oil company job,abi.
Pls leave the job for those who want to do it.
Afterall, its not aliens from Mars that will work in our banks.

STOP THE BIFF!!!!

The future of a banker? Well, I used to work for Zenith Bank then. On the bus from Gbagada to Ajose Adeogun, right in VI, I will see some oyibo's jogging. Yes jogging for life. Meanwhile I've been robbed of sleep which I slug out with the uncomfortable condition and knowledge that am not going to sleep.

I don't even think of the immediate discomfort then. I think of sudden heart attack at the age of 50. Haba! Bank job? In fact all bank M.D.s' should do the retailing, marketing etc themselves.

I wanna live a good life like the oyibo's.

Period!

how much of time do u give less important things? i feel u should use ur youthful time verywell and thats what bankers are doing.the future is bright for a sharp and active banker
Re: How Promising Is The Future Of A Banker? by laurette82(f): 9:39am On Jun 22, 2009
@Lizarazo,please tell them o.
Am very sure that those criticizing banker or bank workers as the case may be are jobless or just sitting down somewhere wondering what its like to work in a bank.
My advise, please look for something doing instead of wasting your time.

not all banks are the same, i believe it first of all starts with management of that bank and the mindset of the people. some banks are still good and worth working in, trust me, it depends on what u enjoy doing and what u find urself doing in the bank.

@Topic,
The Future isn't that bright for people aspiring to be career bankers(using that term).
The best is to work there for a while and move on. . .I work in a new generation bank and I hope to get out latest next year ending.

Banking is a cool profession, but like most other things in Nigeria it has been basterdised. Basically, talking about the pressure on bank staffs for huge deposits. But come to think of it, if you own a business too and you pay your staff salaries (good one for that matter) you'll most likely want them to deliver. the expectection of Bank Ogas is just like that and if well measured may be comensurate to the cash that flows from their treasuries to Bank staff month in, month out. If na u nko?

People in the industry knows they need the money, that's why they stay and pls don't blame them. If you have a better offer for anyone of them or an offer a bit lesser, i believe they won't mind. But for now just leave things as they are.
Re: How Promising Is The Future Of A Banker? by bomb1(m): 12:37am On Jun 26, 2009
The problem is multi-cated:

1.Most bankers don't have a life because they spend their life for the bank
2.Most banks do not have good staff welfare
3.The regulator (CBN et al) never worked at the lower level in a commercial bank,so they don't have a fell of the issues abating the industry because the bottom of the pyramid is the most critical
4.You do not really see many if any bank graduate working in banks. You can give what you don't have.Even if I read history and work in a bank, please train me.
5.The bank's are too competitive with little cooperation for the good of the economy e.g:

No central credit rating monitoring body which checks the credit status of customers.
No single location in nigeria having a form of industrial area as we have in agbara for manufacturing coys
No proper checks on even the staff being employed, you see a staff who had criminal record in bank A but within months get a bumper offer from bank B based on fresh lies he provides durin interview.the loser in this case would be the CUSTOMERs this dude might defraud next  and remember the customer only remembers the bank not the staff

BOTTOM-LINE
Customer service is dead in most banks
No uniformity of operation in any single bank.
Bank marketing in nigeira is emotional (who u know) not professional (what u have in your brains)

ALL THESE BREED STRESS on the innocent banker but remember that the banking industry is still the pivotal employer of labour in nigeria

'Nough 4 now!!!!!!!!!!

The future of a banker depends on him. To get to the top, he must be patient, not rushing, he must have simple eye, not extravagant. He must invest in himself (upgrade mentally) on a regular basis.
