I have seen many brilliant minds here on Nairaland and even Facebook. They make a very brilliant and intelligent presentations/posts. When you read their post, you understand that they have a gifted pen. But this post of theirs didn't give them the kind of popularity they desire, they felt dejected while their intelligent posts never gave them the kind of fame they desire. Then in an attempt to gain this fame by every means because they are obsessed to being noticed, they ended up become atheists. |

Religious folks fail to accept that there are some people that do not just believe in their sky fairy. They say atheists just hate God but how can u hate something that doesn't exist |

It's not like it's easy to be an atheist in this part of the world, so that is a strange generalization that you're making there. I understand that you can't fathom how people don't believe in the mythology that has been repeated over and over to you before you could see the glaring flaws in it. I know that bigots are skilled at ignoring evidence against what they believe; just don't deny the evidence that atheists exist. |

What about famous people (atheists) who are not known for their atheism? |

finofaya:Those ones are understandable, not the ones that will come online to commit blasphemy against God then go back to their room to pray to him just because they need social fame |

CoolUsername:I have no problem with atheists, I respect t the courage they bring up to stand for who they are, such courage is worthy of emulation. But most of these Nigeria atheists still go to church, pray to God and then come on social media to say blasphemy just to impress people to keep their social flame igniting. These are the social pseudo-atheist that am referring to. And these ones are seriously clueless |

akuracy:There are several social stigmas attached to atheism. You may lose friends, people will give you disapproving glances if it becomes common knowledge, it would be difficult to find a job or a spouse, if a theft or some form of crime is committed you'll probably be the first person to be accused. Not everybody can put up with that. I, for one am a closeted atheist who lives with very christian parents; I would not my future or my well-being by telling parents that I'm atheist because I can't predict their actions. So, I will wait till I'm financially independent before I come out. Social media gives us an anonymous platform to air our views in a region where freedom of speech isn't all that free. And yes, some of us get carried away and become trolls but some are basically fountains knowledge. So the fact that some atheists put up a religious front in real life doesn't mean that they're just doing it for attention (although some probably are, who knows? ![]() |
