How It Is To Live As A Doctor In Victoria Islands, Lagos? by drck: 7:03pm On Dec 10, 2015
Hi There,
I am Dr.CK , I have been offered a job as a General Practitioner from Gleneagles Medical Healthcare Ltd, based at Victoria Island, Lagos.
I am actually fascinated by this job offer but i am also confused on making a decision.
I have been reading the posts in this forum and most were informative, but, i still have some queries and it would be a huge favor for me if i could get some right information & suggestions.
My queries are as follows:
1. How much value does a doctor have in a society? aspects of respect, response & safety
2. How much does a doctor earn? as i have been offered 300,000 Naira/month + Food + Accommodation, is this package worth
3. Would my salary be enough just for surviving or will i be able make some savings
4. What all terms of contract i will have to take a double check?

I'm guessing you're an expatriate.

To your concerns.
1)As a Medical Doctor, practising in Nigeria, and in a private setup, the society generally respect your likes. You'd have no issues with garnering respects from folks around, even from fellow colleagues.

2) 300k, plus food and accommodation, fair deal. I have so many GPs as friends, I can authoritatively tell you none of them enjoy the package you are been offered. 300k monthly, with your accommodation and feeding sorted out for you is an excellent package, anywhere in Nigeria.

3)By surviving, what exactly do you mean? Pay utility bills and what else? It all depends on your lifestyle too. You can save as much as you choose to. My opinion though.

4) I don't quite get what you wrote there. But if you are concerned about your employer keeping to the terms of the contract you'd be signing, or have signed with him, I'll advice you have an open mind...one that can take disappointments. The private sector in Nigeria, when it comes to breaking terms of employment, they are kings. There's virtually not a law that puts them in check.

Best wishes, Dr CK

Thank You very much for the information,
I have heard that Victoria island is an expensive place to live and was wondering that if i supposedly go out twice or thrice a week for shopping, bar, restaurant will i be able to do some savings with my package or will i just be surviving.

Yes. VI is an expensive place to live in, in terms of accommodation. But you've got that covered, yeah?
The shopping part, it all depends on your needs and wants. How much you are able to save depends on your lifestyle, really.
