I am about to port from PC gaming to console gaming, and I'm planning to get a ps3. The problem is, I don't know the game per se, I don't know the 'original', firmware and all. I am not planning to be an online gamer, just offline. What do I need to know about the console?
You views and opinions are needed.

Get the console, buy the game CDs you'd like, hook the console up using HDMI (for clearability) or the usual AV cables, switch the game on and learn what you need to know 'on the job'.

Leave firmware alone, do not attempt to upgrade it will most likely brick or corrupt your device like it did mine.
