Why do you want Buhari to die at all cost next year? Is it because of Hatred or is your life frustrated? I don't really get it, why your sole aim in 2016 is for Buhari to die. You better pray to God for forgiveness and prepare your mind for greater things in your personal life in 2016 irrespective Economy pendulum swing. chrischina: |

I think the only way the naira is going to stop falling is by 1.creating and inserting oil loving nanomites into other OPEC countries oil wells 2. starting another Arabian war 3. block all other alternative energy source if not, we are falling in a black hole.endless falling activated. It is a pity that the gurus in economic matters are sleeping. Just take a closer look at the developed countries you will see one denominator "focusing on finished goods". Everyone is crying that the Oil price has fallen so low we can still mitigate this by revamping the refineries and encouraging investors to build more refineries. This alone will reduce 40% pressure on dollars request in Nigeria |

Everything else aside, he is right about th importation. We import a lot of unnecessary items especially from South Africa you begin to wonder if there are no companies in Nigeria. But then again when you look at the high cost of production in the country (esp with respect to overheads and our epileptic power supply) you realize it's cheaper to import than to produce. Take for instance Unilever's Sure. About a year ago it was sold at #450 and imported. Today, importation of the deodorant has been banned, and Nigeria's substitute, Rexona sells for #700 -- that's twice the price of the imported substitute. With an unfriendly business climate, what entrepreneur wouldn't be interested in making decisions and taking options that reduces his business risk? The average business man would rather travel to China, employ cheap labour to manufacture his goods and import back to Nigeria. That's a lot cheaper when you consider the cost siting a factory in Nigeria-- There's the bureaucracy in acquiring land. Tax officials breathing down your neck. Epileptic power supply. Unstable political/Economic climate. Crime. Generally the cost is blowing off the roof. Mr Emefiele and the government will do well to improve the business and investment climate in the country before banning imports. They'll also have to provide infrastructure and palliatives to cushion the most vulnerable in the country, because when this ban on importation starts a lot of people will be unable to afford even the basics. |

If Nigeria wasn't such a corrupt and disorganized country we should have nufn less than $450 billion in our foreign reserves, take a look at Saudi Arabia they are an oil exporting country bt the low oil price isn't causing them any serious discomfort because they have a foreign reserve of about $1 trillion. |

Oga Emefiele, You know this current strategy of the CBN trying deliberate measures like using the foreign reserve to defend currency against the market is not sustainable; they have even proved ineffective. The truth is that the security of our currency may have been breached; people whoa are not authorized are printing it. Also prevention of sharp practices by operators against our currency is poor and there is lack of will to punish offenders. |

dominique:There is no strategy that will work in the short term. Nigerians need to tell themselves the truth: In terms of aggregate world production we are not productive but we like to consume and do so with an incomprehensible sense of entitlement. The only thing that will push up the Naira is external demand for Nigerian products and reduced consumption of imports in Nigeria. Nigeria economy was not strong enough to allow people spend money abroad on VISA cards that was a mistake. That should only happen with PREPAID CARDS i.e you buy the card and load the dollars NOT spend from your account. We cannot continue to blame government for everything. Indians come into Nigeria to make orange juice while we sit on our lazy butts. Even those who steal government funds take it abroad to buy houses. South Africans come to open TV stations and Supermarkets. Ibos pride themselves as businessmen but the core of Ibo business does not bring dollars in rather it helps us consume and spend even more dollars. We need to stop blaming government and look at ourselves. Imagine all the money airlines take out of Nigeria yearly The number one strategy is simple . REDUCE OUR |

Some times I wonder if our leaders are really learned ppl or they are just being insensitive.. How can all importers focus on importation of raw materials and equipment? Who will consume them? Where are the functioning manufacturing industries to consume these goods? Kip promising... It's almost one year gone.. |

yudee233:How can they focus on finish goods where they call any Nigerian good Igbo made ...so we keep importing and naira keeps crashing This is a good development... We should start producing but the average Nigerian hates locally made product and everybody thinks oil. Mark my word...oil will never rise again. Because we have alternative energy sources and cars are not consuming much fuel these days especially Japanese cars .now who wants to buy your oil with shale gas that USA have and other countries that doesn't give a damn about OPEC isn't laughing neither So who will bail us |

omonnakoda:How I wish that people can think like you...we tend to celebrate foreign things ...some idiots where celebrating shop rite , palms and pep malls ..they will go for dstv and allow hitv to die . I just keep asking what the hell is wrong with Blackman When the Igbo produces something they call it Igbo made now they are crying The bottom line is to close the borders do not allow anything we can produce to be imported . anything edible , cosmetics and clothes ...we can't allow importation of furniture not even tooth pick . no provision or groceries should be imported . cars should be brought in in completely knocked down parts and re assembled here ..most electronics should also be in knocked down parts But the Nigerian man will want to enjoy where he didn't suffer always dancing and drinking then sex without doing anything . we are just consumers Without this we can't have string currency We don't even refine common oil The naira wont be strong if we don't do this Take it pls |

| Re: Emefiele Promises Stable Naira In 2016 by omonnakoda: 9:44am On Dec 21, 2015 |
gottliebglobal:It is self explanatory the core of Ibo business has to do with importing and if we try to curb that then that would be seen as a threat to Ibo interests. Ibo importers are a large consumer of government dollars. We need to encourage exports of VALUE ADDED products.Any strategy that carries Ibos along has to encourage Ibos to shift to manufacturing away from importing, buying and selling. Going abroad loading a container and coming to retail is a profitable model that depends on ANOTHER source of FOREX it encourages consumption without thought foor production and encourages the generality of the population to be lazy. Every conversation you have on marginalization on the SE has to do with building a "seaport" in short more importation but where will the dollars come from to pay for it. Importation is like going to a restaurant to eat. The owner is happy when you order and order but at some point the BILL will come and it must be paid. The kind of measures that we need will seriously hurt a lot of Ibo businesses if introduced overnight and that is why there must be consultation and collaboration but we cannot continue as we are. We should be importing machines and equipment not building materials ,clothes and basic electronics |

christopher123:You are almost 100% correct -- we need to get off dependence on oil. However, if there is anything I have come to learn since the late 70s, it is : never write off oil! The bankers and world financial powerhouses will ensure that oil rises; when, I don't know. They'd start a war somewhere strategic maybe. |

christopher123:Alternatives are still probably less than 10% of what fossil fuel powers. For every 'FF' submarine/carrier and e.t.c decommissioned, thousands of fossil fuel engines are built and bought -- same goes for solar. It is still a long way from home for fossil fuel's demise/irrelevance. Prices have crashed and risen over time, in the 70s, 80s, 90s 2000s. |
| Re: Emefiele Promises Stable Naira In 2016 by omonnakoda: 9:57am On Dec 21, 2015 |
christopher123:I don't think closing the borders can work rather there should be a smarter approach of effective duty collection and effective market surveillance .If rich people want to eat bread from London fine just make sure government taxes it and collects the tax e.g $1 per loaf. For those items that are not negotiable government should carry out extensive public enlightenment and give an amnesty perion e.g 6 months and warn people in the markets about which products are prohibited and give them time to adjust . After that start seizing. Even that will not eliminate it 100% but will me more effective. No one takes cocaine to the market to sell and it should be the same for anything government wants to prohibit. Right now the thinking is if you can bring it in then it is OK but when it is impossible to sell frozen turkey anywhere in the open that would be a game changer. Right now the body language of government on banned items is ambivalent |
| Re: Emefiele Promises Stable Naira In 2016 by christopher123(m): 10:09am On Dec 21, 2015 |
omonnakoda:Do you know China closed it border with the policy that what they can't produce they don't need . this was in 80s . I strongly believe in protectionism than this fathom globalisation If the rich man wants to eat bread from London ..he and his friends should tell the London bakers to come to Nigeria and bake that bread here in Nigeria We can't open our borders ..we can't compete ..those dudes have comparative advantage This is the only way Businesses would be given 1 year notice to adjust . we have to make sure that other local firms must compete |
| Re: Emefiele Promises Stable Naira In 2016 by omonnakoda: 10:23am On Dec 21, 2015 |
christopher123:The question is not whether it is a good idea or not .This is not an ideological issue but a practical one. Nigeria is not China and Nigeria does not have the resources or capacity to police its borders. We cannot stop guns and drugs coming in so what are we talking about? Let us focus on what will work in practice not in theory. Even under a military government it will not work how much less a civilian one. There are far too many problems to police in Nigeria,Armed robbery Boko Haram,Illegal refineries, kidnapping and the vast majority f our police are corrupt. You cannot stop rich people spending their money because of ideological hang ups what is important is to focus on the big picture. If rich people have FOREX of their own and want to import garri that is fine just Tax it . I would have no problem with a 1000 naira cup of German garri if 900 naira of it goes to government. Even today a litre of petrol in the EU is well over 300 Naira and much of that is TAX!! while we are fighting for subsidy so effective tax is a smarter curb on demand than banning. The idea that China closed their border totally is a bit exaggerated anyway China has always been more advanced than Nigeria. Our workforce needs major overhauling and upgrading. Nigeria has signed up to WTO rules and has some obligations ther too so we cannot just use bans for everything some of the people we are trying to export to will react so we must think carefully about consequences before acting. But yest the objective should be to increase our productivity and without electricity power some bans will not make sense so we need to act in national interest but do so taking everything into consideration and acting wisely |
