Watching Movies/series With Subtitles Or Without Subtitles? by Nobody: 2:59pm On Dec 21, 2015
I prefer & I'm used to watching English movies/series without subtitles because it helps in my listening skills.....even in some British movies where they use very thick accent that's difficult to understand in one take - overtime my ears become adept to them...

so which do you folks prefer? watching series/movies with or without subtitles

I can watch American or Canadian TV series without subtitles if I have to...their respective accents is very easy on the ears. Nasal, I know, but very articulate.

On the other hand, I find it very hard to follow Aussie & British Shows without subtitles. The regional dialects - Glaswegian, Newcastle and Merceyside - tend to be to much an uphill task to non-native speakers to fully comprehend. I get Cockney, I love cockney, but alas, the London dialect is becoming more and more scarce in British shows.

Aussie accent is a more nasal and subtle manifestation of the cockney variation. Sound lovely to the ears, but more than likely, you would find yourself looking to the subtitles to help you come to terms with their funny pronunciation of simple English words - Eg 'Day' which is pronounced like 'die'... lolz.

Anywho, I don't fancy watching English speaking movies & TV series without subtitles these days. Make things easier and more convenient to take in... more or less.

I actually prefer watching with subtitles,we have to admit watching a movie/series without subtitles you can't say you got everything they said, you must definitely miss some minute details in the words they used. But with subtitles definitely your eyes would be fixed on it(most times its like an involuntary action). You'll be able to get/understand informations faster,so when it comes to dialogue scenes you no fit slack.

But some subtitles no dey help matters sha,lol ,it is meant to be simultaneous with the voices right? But in some cases the subtitles appear before the sound comes(more like 7secs lap),so you don ready know wetin dem go talk before dem talk am grin, and when dem dey talk, the subtitle go dey show another thing cheesy . Or in some cases the subtitle though in english would be in another format from what the actors are saying but its still the same point.

In all seriousness, I love watching my movies/series with the subtitles.. Oh you could also pick up the names of some nice soundtrack with the help from subtitles,no sweat.
Re: Watching Movies/series With Subtitles Or Without Subtitles? by dmcdad: 4:32pm On Dec 21, 2015
Hmmmmm...

Subtitle is a given for me. Good thing is, I download movies from websites where the encoders (60% of the time) attach the subtitle files. And in movies without subtitle files, I make sure to download the files separately and attach it at the beginning of the movie for a better and more enjoyable experience.

Sometimes I just need it in order for me not to miss even the least word. Other times its especially for not straining my ears much more than I ought in trying to grasp whatever that is being said.

All in all, I like using subtitles.

For the emboldened, I don experience am tire.cheesy But the thing is, we sometimes download the wrong subtitle files for our movies. I was downloading movies (very recent ones) some days ago, and happened to stumble upon a 2012 movie, the expatriate. Where problem come dey na say to get the exact file for brrip encoder. I download like 10 and yet I never get the exact one with the correct synchronisation. I ended up getting it though after much trials.

There are two things we should note in downloading subtitle files. One is the fact that, you can actually sync a subtitle file to your movie by adding extra seconds or removing extra seconds from it depending on whether the words are sounded after the subtitle or before. This is not always easy though because it takes lots and lots of tinkering to get the point of equilibrium. The second fact is this; when getting a subtitle file, make sure you get one that matches the encoder of your movie title. If you visit sites like subscene or subtitles.org, they will give a note besides each subtitle files about which encoder it matches. Sometimes they will write 'perfect for all brrips' or perfect for all HDrips and WEB-DL and so on...

So, in cases where getting the exact file is a trouble, I will just head to one of the aforementioned sites and download the right subtitle file according to my encoded video type which happens to be mainly 720p BRRip, 720p WEB-DL or 720p HDRip.

If it's a foreign language film, I prefer subtitles to dubs. Sometimes I use subtitles in some series, once in a while, you get additional dialogue.
Re: Watching Movies/series With Subtitles Or Without Subtitles? by khalhokage(m): 7:00pm On Dec 21, 2015
Dialogue is important to me so I'll use subtitles whenever available, I mean imagine watching a movie starring Matthew Mccounaughey or Johnny Depp without subtitles. cheesy

I'm addicted to subs. Both for movies and TV shows. Cuz sometimes, I mishear some words. Also, I get to catch some faint dialogue.

And it also helps in getting to know lots of words that are coined from the sound they make, especially those complete subs.

You never hear concrete American redneck accent, by the time you clean your ear finish, you go still deaf. As for the British accent, picture this, last year the BBC used subtitles in their Countryfiles program for one old Irish man, and the Irish complained, I watched the clip, I did not understand one lick of what the man was saying. I was wondering whether I didn't know the English language. Those subtitles were my lifeboat, I was the Titanic, baba was the iceberg.

Let's not even talk about slang, we're used to American slang because we watch American tv, I may reside in England, but I don't know what slang mandem are using & I don't intend to start.

grin grin grin
Trying to speak the language of the Angles with a celtic tongue is bound to be a riot. That's why the Irish talk funny, methinks.

For me, I love to hear every word in a movie/series, infact, in movies without sub, I can be caught rewinding a scene just to get what was said, reason why I enjoy watching my movies alone and without noise 'cuz I hate to miss a word (but that doesn't mean I don't do cinemas, am a huge fan but unfortunatley I've not been there for a while due to busy schedules so am restricted to downloads in my free time).

So to your question I'l say, I also do prefer subs but I dont go all out to find them. Just imagine watching a comedy and you dont get a thing of what they are saying aside their laughter, could be a lil bit unsettling.

Can be very annoying, I usually just stop watching such but again, there are times the movie is too interesting you would want to just manage.

Ya,most times when doing the 'manage to watch',I always never make it all the way through(no matter how the film sweet me ,cus I won't be able to avoid eye movement on the rubbish subtitle cheesy ) .When I'm watching movies, everything needs to be perfect, any slight glitch I won't take it.

A kindred spirit? I'm a bit of the perfectionist myself. The subtitles MUST sync with the audio, else I wouldn't be able to enjoy the viewing.

. Same here. I don't even wanna know if the difference in sync is just some milliseconds. If it ain't perfectly synced, then it's off.

I'd rather see the movie without a sub than with it not properly and perfectly synced.
Re: Watching Movies/series With Subtitles Or Without Subtitles? by Creamish(f): 4:14pm On Dec 22, 2015
Dunno which is worse....a terrible attempt at subtitle or the delay btw the speech/sounds and the scene itself..as in dem don talk finish 10secs before the actual scene plays out...

Personally I dont mind subtitles if its correct..When the audio isn't clear, I'd rather have a subtitle.

I cant remember the last time i watched a movie with subtitles, in as much as its an english movie.. I am used to watching movies and some tv shows on cable, and even news too, they all dont come with subtitles..Its like telling me to watch 'fashion police' or 'the soup' with subtitles. grin

watching movies without subtitles actually improves ur spoken english..

I just watch my movies, series, reality shows as they come(without subtitles)

have you seen where there is subtitle to football commentary or news

Which is why you will have to rewatch it to take cognizance of certain words or phrases.

Well, I guess whatever rocks your boat. But I have learnt a whole lot from subtitles especially words that are coined from sounds.

For some subtitles (complete), you get the subtitle for the smallest things even. You get a sub for something as subtle and as insignificant as a pin-drop. Isn't that cool? You get a sub for a genre of music playing... Sometimes you see something like; melancholy music playing. For someone who doesn't have an iota of idea what a melancholy music is like, the person can take cue from such and it will help such a person to identify melancholy music whenever it is heard.

There are numerous other stuffs one could benefit from using subs. But like I said earlier on, whatever rocks your boat. One man's vital appeal... Make I no complete am.cheesy

Am xo addicted to subtitles so tey.. If dey release a new episode of a TV_Series today, and d sub isn't out yet or i cant find d perfect sub sync, i ll postpone watching the Series till i get the sub... I dnt like missing a single word said in a movie or series.... Someone up there said it's being lazy.. Thats a lie... With subtitle u train ur eyes to move fast enough to catch the glimpse of the complete word thereby making u fast in reading and comprehending...
