The Spanish Empire in its heydey, spanned both sides of the globe and ushered in the most modern age (for the west) after the decline of the Roman Empire. It did tie with the Portuguese Empire somewhat, for control of territory, but Spain seems to have impacted northern America more significantly compared to Portugal. In contrast, the Portuguese empire spanned much of Africa, India and the southern Americas. |
