When they hear theory, what comes to mind is "guess work". You see statements like " its just a theory , its not fact" . Going by their definition of theory that means the wave theory of light is not a fact but a guess work.

When we talk about scientific stuffs, we use scientific definitions.

A theory is an idea or set of ideas that is intended to explain facts or events.

A theory CANNOT be promoted to a fact.

A theory explains a fact.

Evolution is a fact.

Evolution theory sets to explain evolution(a fact).

You deciding not to accept it doesn't change the fact.
