Wrong!

As far as there has not been any court pronouncement on the matter, that MTN has gone to court cannot be used to excuse the fine.

If MTN didn't accept it erred, why did they plead with the govt to reduce the fine which was subsequently reduced.

If NCC/FG really want to deal with MTN, their licence could be withdrawn with immediate effect. It will be good news to many other telecommunication companies that will be happy to take such opportunity from MTN.

MTN in my opinion is playing with FIRE!
Forget that thing...It was during the same period that NCC fined MTN that they went ahead to renew mtn license... This government should be smart, no country fines a foreign company with such amount and does not loose other foreign company... Also, MTN contributes largely to your country's GDP if you don't know...If emptyhen leaves, who will cover up the percentage fall? ( ans= the suffering masses). MTN should be fined but let the fine be reasonable.... This is the same government that fined FO a merger N4million for hoarding fuel but they fine banks several billions of naira....Naija govt is the dumbest I swear.

Buari should prove his worth by BANNING MTN from Nigeria.

I am ready to give up my MTN line, though its my business, company and banking line.

MTN is a very wicked company. For 3 weeks now, once i load a card and dont finish it that day, by morning my balance becomes ZERO. After calling 180 and writing them via email, nothing has CHANGEd.

BAN MTN and stop chasing rats like Dasuki and Namadi Kalu.

Nigeria needs that N720bn by next week..

Disobedience to law requires adequate punishment and reprimands be it an individual or establishment. MTN is not bigger than the law and should pay for disobeying and flouting business laws of Nigeria. They rather cooperate with the necessary authorities in finding a meaningful solution or leave our shores. I don't think South Africa will tolerate any Nigerian firm flouting its orders or any other country for that matter.
God bless u for this lovely comment!

You guys should stop being ignorant... No foreign buyer will ever buy a company that a government levied a N1.4tn hefty fine due to the fear of suffering the same fate....This government should treat this issue cautiously, because I found out that MTN also contributes about 4%-8% to our GDP...If MTN leaves, the country will have a short fall of 4%-8% in GDP and it is the ordinary citizens that will be used to cover up on this....I don't even want to mention the number of people that will be unemployed..
don‘t worry ntel will take over...i‘m sure this is what mtn dey think...i wont be suprised tho

Wrong. Going to court does not stop the NCC. Its within their statutory functions to impose fines. The only thing the court can do is ask them to refund mtn...and thats if mtn is successful, which I doubt!

What strategies does ntel have in taking over a multinational company all at once...The same ntel that couldn't survive when it was mtel or Nitel...Government shouldn't be involved in running telecommunication companies due to their corrupt tendencies especially in Nigeria were corruption abounds....In developed countries, telecoms are run buy private investors and when they err, they should be fined appropriately not bogus amounts just because you want to use it to add to next year budget were they plan to use it to buy cars...

NCC had no reason not to renew MTN's licence then.

The fine, even though huge, was known to MTN in the meeting all telecommunication coys had with NCC. Plus they were warned on previous violation before this particular one.

Forget about who will cover percentage fall. There are many telecommunication companies that will be happy to jump in. Withdrawal of their licence could be effective in six months from the day the pronouncement is made thereby using the period to get other coys enter the market.

Don't tell me MTN is indespensable in our telecommunication industry.

NCC should not be seen to be lacking in enforcement powers. They should be seen to have a bite to go with their bark. If MTN gets away with flouting the laws of their host country,it will be a recipe for disaster. All this talk about people losing jobs and chasing away foriegn investment is just ludicrous. In as much as we want companies to come and invest,we shouldn't be at their mercy and watch them run riot in the country. You want people to come rent your house but keep it in a decent state not tear the house apart simply because they're renting it.

South Africa is very tolerant when it comes to foreign investment. When any foreign company which is of a value to its market flount its regulations it won't rush to impose a hefty fine. It will afford the other party to present its case and listen whether it was deliberate or unintentional. It will only be after everything else has been exhausted that they will consider applying some little lashes but not to kill the company.

It should be borne in mind that foreign investment is important to our developments. They create jobs; sponsor major events and sports; sponsor education and offer scholarships to our students to study in local and overseas universities; they are major contributors of revenues through tax and also they help develop infrastructure through investment.

Why do we have to go to foreign countries to ask for investment? We invite them to our countries and when they do wrong we want to kill them without looking into facts. Investors are also not in our mercy, they can as well drop us like a hot potato and leave us with a dwindling economy.
I will pretend u dint see this "They rather cooperate with the necessary authorities in finding a meaningful solution or leave our shores". That we go cap in hand begging for FDI doesn't mean this foreign establishment should treat us with disregard. Mind you, No foreign company comes here to make u better of, rather they reap us of.

Do you think running telecom is as easy as running an oil company. Those are two different things and your insinuation is not feasible at all.
It is by far easier to run a telecoms company than an oil company. Far far easier. You probably haven't been on an oil platform or seen seismographic work in progress

It does not need a rocket scientist to see that the NCC hefty fine imposed on MTN was predetermined and was meant to fund for Buhari N6 trillion budget. NCC knew well that MTN has millions of subscribers and affording them a small time frame will definitely catch them flat footed with many millions of unregistered subscribers still waiting to be deactivated. However, NCC according to NCA does not have powers to draft the law, implement it and prosecute when that law is violated. It is only a state that has such powers.

You say there are many companies ready to jump in. How encouraging has the regulator being to make anybody want to just come in after seeing all that is going on. They will always fear that when they "jump in" they have no assurances of not becoming victims too? I doubt it.

If MTN said they had no fair hearing and went to court for that reason, NCC has nothing to worry about and wait for the court to decide, simple as that. Whats the rush for

In your dreams. Oil is a natural resource and it is mined naturally. Telecoms does not come naturally, you need billions of dollars to run such services.
