Mileage is very important because it's a pointer to other factors. The more miles the vehicle travels the more the wears and tears on the vehicle parts. I will recommend you go for a car with a mileage below 90,000km, you will definitely enjoy your money. Talking from experience, I have been using a Hyundai SUV that I got at a lower mileage for over five years with no issues, only to service it twice a year with genuine oil filter and mobile oil. Engines of vehicles with mileage above 200,000km can pack up at anytime even if the exhaust is still dropping water when you start the car because the average lifespan of any vehicle engine is 200,000km. |

Mileage no matter bro I once drove a Honda eod 03 Europe spec .. The mileage was around 249.000km and never refill ac or nothing except wen I change tyres.. And I service both engine n gear .. I recommend mobile 1 oil n mobile ATF . fuel consumption very low n it's a 4 plug.. High horse power maybe simply cuz it's a 2.4vtli. Go for a ride of ur choice. At least u should know a good ride wen u see one. Some pple don't have luck wit cars tho that depends on ur maintainance . 2 Likes |

niceface: you are right when you say high mileage leads to wear and tear of a vehicle, but saying and average engines life span is 200,000 km is as false as my uncle is dantata. i bought a 2009 toyota camry with a mileage of 170,000, driven it going to a year now, i have never been to the mechanic save for oil change and filters as well as air filter change. the AC is top notch and i have over 200, 000 km on it right now. the suspension is sublime, the engine purrs like a hor/ny girl. dude you will fu/ck my car if you see it. on the other hand i also own a 1999 Crv whose last trip to a mechanic was last year june. and this crv have  about 400,000 miles on it.mileage makes no difference, maintainance does. 8 Likes |

Some people tend to ignore the mileage. For me the mileage is almost always an indication of the degree of wear and tear. A car above 100,000 is beginning to feel the friction of wear and tear. I would be interested in things like maintenance record. Expect to spend a fair amount on repairs. A car under 100000 is generally a very good one. It tells me it has not being overly used and perhaps may still be as good as new provided it wasnt flooded. A car that is way over 100000 (like 150k, 180k upwards) is a gamble. Those are the type of cars that may have been used as a rental car, or has been used extensively for long distance trips and possibly some haulage too. Its a different story if the car spent most of its active live in Nigeria especially if it was used in Lagos. There are no guarantees for that one no matter how low the mileage is. Anybody buying a Nigerian used car should bear in mind that the previous owner sold off the car to pass the burden of liability. 2 Likes |

Otutu1:/ A typical car lease is about 4-5 years. And per dealership, the mileage restriction is about 10k/year. Within that 4-5years, the dealership does all the routine maintenance. So the car should be in a top notch condition after the lease is up. After the lease is up, the car is usually traded in and sold off. For a 2006 car, calculate 10k/year x 9 years = 90,000 miles. Since the civic has 100k miles, it is fair to assume that the owner took good care of it baring any flooding, unreported accident(s), etc. I think it is a good buy. Have a competent mechanic check it out for you. And by any chance if you have the VIN#, some NLers will help you with the report (for US used cars). \ 1 Like |

Bought my car, a 2005 Acura offroader at 40k miles in 2014 july..its now 52k miles.. Engine is ok, but suspension, issues..always either shocks, bearing or other. I hv also since changed the brake disc n i keep hearing noises on sthe legs.mschew |

When u Go to testing ground in ikeja, U no go use mileage as a prerequisite for buying cars especially naija used cars. All those cars u see around with ridiculously low mileage have their odometer already tampered with. A car dealer was trying to convince me last year that his 2006 Honda Accord has a true mileage of 55k. After much investigation I found out that the car had already clocked 120k. I used that as a bargaining point but latter backed out cos for him not to be sincere with the mileage, I knew he can't be trusted as regards the true state of the car. 3 Likes |

Hmmm...interesting!... IMO... proper maintenance is most important but mileage is a very important consideration. Even if well maintained and running trouble free parts of that car are well worn and would soon fail or have to be replaced. Where the car operated is also important.....was the car from a mountainous region?...transmission would fail at lower mileage. Was the car city based?... more parts would be stressed due to stop and go driving.... so high miles for a city based car should be way lower than a car based in a relatively flat region. Like someone said earlier...find out the history if the car...who knows. ..maybe the car was used to fetch yams. .. or to drag race! 1 Like |

What does mileage mean? Well, it could mean everything, or nothing. Personally, mileage means little to me. I have always purchased cars based upon current condition, how it drives, how it looks, and service history, if it has any. I don't even look at the odometer most of the time. Plug into the OBD port, check for DTC's, test drive the car extensively, decide. I feel the main issue here is people's expectations, and being way too hung up on mileage. I've seen threads whereby a subscriber is looking to purchase a 1999 Toyota Camry. Now average annual mileage is between 10,000 to 12,000 miles. So a 16-year-old car would most likely be around the 160,000 mile mark, assuming the lower annual mileage. Now you tell the average Nigerian prospective buyer his dream car has over 100,000 miles on the odometer @ 16-years old, he'll feel it's excessive. He'll go as far as asking a dealer to find him a similar car, with 50,000 miles. Which to my thinking is unrealistic. Such cars exist, but they are the exception rather than the rule. And when they DO come up for ale, they are priced accordingly. So in a way, you guys who attach too much sentiment to mileage actually drive up prices of low-mileage cars, and end up being fleeced by unscrupulous dealers who are only too happy to feed your appetite for unrealistic mileage for any given car based upon its age. I know history is difficult to trace in Nigerian-used cars, and with some imports. But...you can make things easy for yourself, by getting as much information about the car you're interested in. Join forums that cater for your chosen model, read up on common fixes and bugs, then inspect the car with a decent tech. You should know enough about your car not to be given a snow job by your mechanic. The average Nigerian car owner does NOT even know what engine is fitted to the car they've purchased, and have been using for the past 5 years! That's something I've never been able to come to terms with. My old 1995 Audi Coupé S2 had 543,000 miles when I sold it. I purchased it with 33,000 miles on the odometer, so I put 510,000 miles on the car during my ownership. Never missed a beat, I carried out its service every 12 months. Several trips across Continental Europe, sometimes driving through 2 countries in one trip. The car is still going strong, and the current owner has taken the mileage to 837,000 miles (as at March this year). I still service the car very year for her. I have replaced the clutch, rear section of the exhaust, driver's electric window motor and an alternator. Not bad for a car that's close to a million miles and 21-years old! My current Audi A4 Quattro Sport is a 2000 model, and will be 16-years-old in March. I would describe it as an immaculate example, with original paintwork. If I purchased a non-age related license plate, people would assume it was newer than it really is. This is my 16-year-old car, with below average mileage for the year. Buy a car you're happy with, that ticks all your boxes, and enjoy it. Be more on earned with it's condition, and you won't go far wrong!         11 Likes 1 Share |

Using mileage to determine the condition of a car can prove to be quite erroneous in the least. A car used extensively for highway travel may most likely have higher mileage as compared to a similar year model used mostly for short runs within town. Town usage leads to lots of wear and tear due to the lots of stop-and-go required. The highway used car despite its higher mileage however, may not have much wear as stop-and-go is much less on the highway. |

vani86: Everythin on it was almost brand new..nothing unscrewed..nothing opened...no single drop of oil anywhere..all paper tags intact..engine never tampered with, unopened...so i dnt knw how it could hv been rolled back..but for the suspension..still runs like new.if i put in on and am beside it..atimes i fear its gone off. I hv to put my hand on the hood to be sure its still on.no sound |

rita25:Was wondering when someone will point this out, and alas, when someone did, it was a girl. I was going to buy a camry 2009 once, I saw two I liked. One read 45k on mileage, and the other 120k. I picked the 120k. They were both tokunbos and I didn't need anyone to tell me a car manufactured in 2009, having a mileage of 45k, had its meter adjusted. Well, my choice to pick the one with 120k, was not only based on its mileage. I checked the history of both cars online using their VIN and d one that had 45k on it was in an accident twice. Really if one isn't buying a brand new car, to some extent, one would need luck. U will never know what these cars have been through overseas before been refurbished and sent here. 1 Like |
