Pavore9:
This short video is about an enterprise in Uganda that process ripe bananas and pineapples by solar drying which anyone who is creative enough can set up with locally available materials. They export to Europe but for us, the local Nigerian market is very huge on its own. One can solar dry variety of fruits and vegetables. This is rural area friendly because electricity is not required and one can comfortably set up a processing centre there using the women/youth there as labour.

Along the line, getting NAFDAC certification so that one can comfortably distribute the products.

I encourage this video be downloaded so it can be watched repeatedly.

Oga pavore, dis is very inspiring!
" D lengths u go, for d love of ur motherland"
But i have some concerns, i see thruout d whole process, bare hands were used in handling d fruits. how hygenic can dat be? even mouths n nose were not masked, to avoid breathing n spitting (from talking) on d fruits.
is it dat a further processing is done(behind d scenes ) to preserve d product b4 packaging?

you are very right. Agriculture and agro processing is the way to economic stability. A venture I am proud to be part of. Fish farmers should embrace fish processing. This will prevent post harvest losses and glut in the sector. Agro Processing is the way!!!
Please sir, I am honored to see the fish packaging you are doing. I intend to go into full time food packaging because I can predict it is part of the future of Nigeria. I need your assistance on how I can get the packaging bags/nylon at a very affordable price sir.
Please help

I guess you saw where they wash their hands. Since they have been certified to export to the UK, l believe inspections were made first. You can choose to have gloves and mouth masks worn.

After the drying which from the video takes 2 days they are packed and tied up and moved to the factory where it is hand sorted, the slice that does not meet the required standard are put aside and then packed. No preservatives were added and the shelf life be about three months or more.

I did an experiment on how long cucumber and cabbage can last without refrigeration. I bought 3 cucumbers for 30ksh (N60) and a cabbage for 20ksh (N40)on the 23rd of December from the open market and left them on my kitchen's countertop. The average daytime temperature in my kitchen hovers between 18°C and 20°C while at night is around 15°C. The cucumbers are still looking fresh but they will end their earthly journey tomorrow when l will get them juiced while the cabbage began to degenerate on the 4th of January, so had to juice it up.

This shows farmers with good preservation system can hold on to their harvests for a longer time and not forced to sell off for fear of spoilage . Research is wealth.
Re: My Thoughts For 2016 by Newway2(m): 5:49pm On Jan 09, 2016
If the vegies cld still look fresh for/after roughly 2wks at room temperatures betwn 18°C and 20°C, then it will definitely look moresh fresh for a longer time if the room temperature cld be ruduced to arnd 10°C using a simple method of rural cold room.

Hmmmmmm, this is food for thought.

I think the cucumber will still remain fresh after maby days but the outer body will be hard when u eat it than how it was when fresh.

you are right sir. these veggies can last very long. especially cucumbers
Re: My Thoughts For 2016 by Pavore9(mod): 3:38pm On Jan 15, 2016
Did some research on some Nigerian foodstuff and found out one can get Garri (a kilo for N400) and good palm oil (a litre for N450) in Uganda while Egusi and Ogbono from Congo DR while Uziza seeds (Piper guineese) is also grown here in Kenya as it is packaged and sold in supermarkets here in Nairobi. These reduces the dependency of bringing stuff from Nigeria. cheesy

Vegetable farmers should really focus on post harvest preservation as it will save them from selling below a price that is not comfortable for their operations.

Am into non-agricultural exports. Visit the Nigerian Export Promotion Council http://www.nepc.gov.ng/ and also visit any of their offices it will help you in knowing the right process involved to avoid loss.

Encouraged some Kenyan friends into vegetables and spice farming to grow Bitter Apple (Egusi) as l can easily link them with Nigerians in Kenya to buy the harvest off them as it would be far cheaper than bringing it in from Nigeria though Congo DR do grow it but growing it in Kenya will be preferable and it would sell for cheap.

Thank u very much @Pavore9 for this beautiful eye-opening revelation. I will definitely be trying my hands on this asap. I've watched this video over 20times today alone. It's so unbelievable how ignorant I've been. This is really a very doable project here in Nigeria and with over 150million population we need no other market than what we have. I'll experiment with other fruits as 'SWEET N DRY' have done. God bless u bro. Also looking into the redstark apple too... God bless u immensely bro

The beauty in freely sharing knowledge where possible is that the source never runs dry. The Nigerian market alone is bigger than the entire East Africa region. Fruits during its season wastes a lot, solar-drying them creates new lines of opportunities. When tomatoes are so very cheap, solar drying and making powder out of it would make so much sense. Watch this short video to give you an idea.

We are so richly blessed with land size, good weather and a VERY HUGE MARKET.......a smart mind who ties these three together with innovative knowledge is bound to soar! Kenya is seriously eyeing the Nigerian market because they are convinced we comfortably spends so much!

Good morning sir. Only God will bless you for all the things you are doing. When I watched the solar drying video, I thought within myself that it can be possible for tomatoes. I thank God there is available information about tomatoes powder. We will get there by His grace. Any news about the mail I sent earlier?

It seems l skipped your mail but would certainly check and reply before the day runs as l can't access my mail account where l am now. One can solar dry a whole lot of things. When tomatoes are properly solar dried and powdered it can last for many years without adding any preservatives.

@ Pavore9 what is the possibility of drying tomatoes with solar dryer looking at the moisture content?

It very possible and when properly dried can then be ground into powder form, they are many videos on it on YouTube.

This video should give an idea on experimenting on your own.

Wonderful thread Pavore. I tried drying some pawpaw slices and at the end some look burnt. I don't know if it's bc of excessive sunshine. I'll watch the video later to see how the did theirs.
