Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, at the weekend ended speculations that the current administration will revoke contracts awarded under former President Goodluck Jonathan.

Fashola spoke in Abuja at the Nigerian Pension Industry Strategy Implementation Roadmap meeting.

The former Lagos governor lamented how successive governments revoked contracts of previous regimes, noting that the practice destroyed investor confidence in an economy. The minister stated that if approved contracts must be touched, the best approach was to renegotiate rather than outright revocation.

“We must not play politics with our economy. Investors want continuity,” he said.

Fashola warned against playing politics with economic survival, as investors want continuity of government policies.

Never liked this man.
But if this statement from him is true, then he is the most intelligent person in this present government. He seems to know how to tackle different problems with different solutions.
But the problem is he works under and for a dullard ?? The dullard is taking governance personal and he has forgotten that Nigeria is not his daura farm.

The owner of the land above me thinks this administration is an extension of the clueless government where only one minister of agriculture had sense.

Is this a code word to cancel all the infrastructure progress made by Jonathan as is the habit of the dull, daft & dumb Confused One since 1984

Splashme:
The first civilian governor of Lagos State, Alhaji Lateef Jakande, on Tuesday, said that the cancellation of the Lagos metroline project in 1985 was a major mistake and disservice to many Nigerians.

Jakande spoke in Lagos during the launch of a book which chronicled his life in politics and journalism.

The book, entitled, ‘Jakande: Leadership in Action’ is written by Dr. Bola Olaosebikan, who told the audience at the event that the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), was not responsible for the cancellation of the project.

Jakande said, “Reflecting on the metroline project, I think it is a major disservice to many Nigerians. Imagine how many people would have benefitted. It would have made life easier and changed the face of transport in Lagos. Whoever cancelled it or gave the advice towards its cancellation didn’t do right.”

The former governor asked Nigerians not to vote for unserious leaders in the coming polls, saying the elections presented Nigerians with a good opportunity that should not be squandered.

Expressing the hope that Nigeria would soon overcome its developmental challenges, Jakande said hope would be actualised faster if credible people emerged as leaders in the next dispensation.

He said, “This book comes at a very auspicious time in Nigeria’s history as we need leaders who can act. We need leaders who would not compromise the standards of good governance. God has blessed this nation the most in Africa, although we have not reached where we should be; with the right leaders, Nigeria would overcome its challenges.”

If this is true, then those that won contracts will sue the federal government, just like when Buhari cancelled the Lagos Metro line in 1984/5 and paid more in damages than the metro would have cost

I dont think U understand the English very well, because he is not trying to scrap it rather he said he will renegotiate meaning he will visit the documents again.

I think Fashola is trying to warn the one man squad aka Mr know it all, aka ajala the traveller abt the consequences of playing politics with contracts awarded by the previous administration.

Having said that, I strongly believe that if the next president and VP of this country are Fashola/Peter Obi, Nigeria may be transformed drastically. Me I'm personally tired of all these politicians mehn, they all crooks.

PS: Fashola and Peter Obi are like the freshest politicians amongst the lot. Fashola, a lawyer by profession became governor without really having been a politician in the past, same goes for Obi who was a very successful business man b4 he became governor. Both guys really did a lot to transform their respective states though I still believe Fashola cud hv done much much more better especially in lagos mainland. God bless us all...

Re: FG Will Renegotiate Contracts Awarded Under Jonathan – Fashola by omohayek: 11:35am On Jan 25, 2016
The title of the article is misleading. What Fashola actually said was that it's better for new administrations to renegotiate contracts rather than cancelling them outright. Nowhere does he say he intends to renegotiate any contracts himself.

In any case, the point Fashola is getting at - that continuity is essential to ensure investor confidence - should really be common sense to any government that cares about attracting foreign investment. One of the reasons Nigeria is in the mess it is today is because of a very long history of governments making radical changes that destroy investor trust - from indigenization decrees, nationalizations and import quotas in the 1970s, to abrupt cancellation of power privatization during the Yar'adua administration, to arbitrary forex restrictions under the current regime. No one will want to put their money in a country whose governments have such a terrible reputation for caprice as Nigeria's.

Well, it's obvious IPOB youths are beginning to align with this govt albeit stylishly. With the seriousness of this govt, just a little time, and their hate speeches will become history. Remember: Fashola is just one among many surprises. So save your rant and praised, we don't need it. Daura bubu for President.

You don't seem to understand what fashola said. What he is saying is that cancelling the contracts signed by previous government will create problems for the country so due to the present economic situation of the country the contracts needs to be renegotiated to reflect the current economic situation. He is saying that the present government should not play partisan politics with the nation problems and solutions. Nice idea but will the dullard president listen to these wise words from fashola ? I doubt it

For once I concur with a nairalander, the initial title of this article was 'cancel' it has now been changed to 'renegotiate'... I didn't think Fashola would have been that daft.
