Nigeria To Emerge Africa’s Economic Hub In 2026 –onu by iliyande(op): 1:13pm On Jan 25, 2016
MINISTER of Science and Technology, Dr. Ogbonnaya Onu has said the commitment of President Muhammadu Buhari towards diversifying the nation’s economy will make Nigeria an economic hub of the continent in the next 10 years.

Playing host to the Managing Director of United Nations Industrial Development Organisation (UNIDO) Programme Development and Technical Cooperation Division, Philippe Scholtes, in Abuja at the weekend, the minister said the ministry was committed to use science and technology to save the nation by growing its economy.

Onu thanked UNIDO for its contributions globally and in Nigeria with the partnership to grow energy and agro-business.

He appealed to UNIDO to increase its efforts as well towards boosting agriculture to ensure food security in the country.

The minister specified that UNIDO’s involvement in food protection will not only lift farmers out of poverty but will tame rural-urban migration.

“We will be very happy if you could add food security because you will touch more persons and would be able to lift more persons out of poverty in Nigeria,” he said.

Earlier, Scholtes told the minister that UNIDO has earmarked $2.6 billion for the development of Small Hydro Power (SHP) plants in Nigeria in line with its mandate to promote, and accelerate inclusive and sustainable industrial development in developing countries.

“We obtained funding for $2.6 billion to help us demonstrate the small scale hydro power to powerhouse and factories in places that have not been reached by electricity.

“This project funded by Global Environment Facility funds is meant to help countries address environment issues that can benefit the global communities,” the UNIDO boss stated.

Per the highlighted statements in above post, it is discern as a march of different beats. Why the one in black seemed to be a fair statement, the second in red exudes the silly politics always played in Nigeria. In addition, how could Nigeria sustain the industrial revolution without adequate school system to feed the industries?

You do know that Nigeria was well on its way to achieving the Vision 20:20 agenda started by Umaru and repurposed by GEJ.

Form being the 34th largest economy in the world, we are now the 21st largest economy in the world. *The target was to be the 20th largest in the world.

From a GDP per capital of about $1,900, we are now at about $3,400. *The target was $4000.

I'm sure if you dig deeper you will find how we are getting much closer to the target. (Arguing that most of the gains is due to the rebasing is a fair argument, but there is more that meets the eye).

If the North and SW had not been myopic and selfish, GEJ would have achieved and surpassed the target by 2019.

The problem with lots of Nigerians is that we look at the EU, North America, oil-rich gulf states, and the Asian tigers and want to make huge gains in short times without appropriately weighing the challenges.

Until we learn to be realistic with our expectations we will continue to have leaders that make us appear as though we lack brains.

Make a poll of what Nigerians think constitute the top 5 problems, ways to solve them, how long it would take, and the amount of money that is necessary; and you will find that most Nigerians have their heads in Mars and their bodies on planet earth.

Nigerians are Nigeria's problem. Not corruption, not leaders, not foreigners, not electricity, not [insert problem here]... Nigerians.
