Just hear yourself is it all parents that are able to do the dedication and thanksgiving with that amount of money? This is not a right yardstick to judge.
Mr or what ever you are, if you wanna be educated then go pay money.

To acquire sound education, it requires sacrifices and discipline.

From a supposed "educated" Dean, shocking to say the least.

To think that she even made bold to say she passed through UI.

A dean that does not know where and when to use "was" and "were" have no right to say education is not meant for the poor.

Absolutely Wrong! Poor people with rich brains can get scholarships or loan to study anywhere. Therefore, we could say education is meant for those who are interested to be educated.

For example many years ago, I desired to get a skill from NIIT but I couldn't afford it, guess what ? my parents took a loan so I went to NIIT to study for ccna and a+

Everything is possible, if you believe.
I agree with you. But @ the same time, education is still meant for those that can afford it. Not everyone could have access to the loan your parents got then. I'm sure no one cared about the source of your school fees too. In all, tertiary education is expensive almost everywhere in the world. So I believe the statement is right.

Obafemi Awolowo University Dean Student Affairs (DSA) made a release yesterday with the part "Education is for those that can afford it" boldly written. Is she right? If she is right then it implies that Education is now for the rich.

A sad statement from a beneficiary of the free education policy of the western region under Action Group.
May all our rewards be in heaven. Like Fahrakhan would say the black race is plagues by individuals who for all intests and purposes ensure the door is slammed shut once they get in, hindering others who may want to come behind

Whoever made that comment doesn't have the mindset of an educationist. In principle education is meant for everyone, unfortunately only some can afford it.

The message of the writer is lost on you. It's a no brainer. Education is meant for those who can afford it, it doesn't now matter how you "afford" it. Poor students can afford it via scholarships or loans.

Not completely true
Why did I said so, a reasonable government should strive to educate it's citizens, physically, morally, educationally, religiously, financially and otherwise because it will reduce some social vices crimes and ills, when you citizens is educated they make reasonable choices and support the government. My 50cent
That is basic education, not tertiary education.

the phrase EDUCATION IS meant for those that can afford is from the pit of hell

in a well structured society education is meant for every body that is willingly to learn
Re: Education Is meant for those who can afford it(picture) by VanOmiyale: 11:31am On Jan 26, 2016
Probably she should have said higher education is meant for those who can afford it. The truth is that not everybody will be able to afford higher education. Even in the most developed countries of the world not everybody can afford it and a lot of people have to rely on student loans. What the government should do is to make sure that education is free and compulsory from elementary to at least junior secondary level.

Reading the comments here make me know why Nigeria is in the state it is. Majority of the posters agree with a statement deleterious to progress of the country and defend it with all their might. Similar to how we lynch petty thieves but are ready to protest a full week for billion-looting politicians.

If the whiteman thought along the lines of this person I highly doubt their nations would get to the level they are. Even poor European nations know the value of education and fund scholarships for their citizens from primary to even masters level.

I see living a life of poverty erodes the Nigerian brain so bad we don't even know how to act when good things come our way.

Basic education should be free for all... and Tertiary Education for those that can Afford it.

"If you think Education is Expensive, try Ignorance"

The quote "If you think education is expensive, try ignorance" is widely credited to the former president of Harvard University Derek Bok.

And yes! he was referring to University Education.
If u say so..

From the supposed acting Dean this a most unfortunate missive, she should be made to apologise for making such a statement. She even goes ahead to make a grammatical blunder in the same letter in which she is trying to to make education out to be some sort of elitist thing. Rubbish!

Education should be a human right. Up to first degree level, in the least. To source for funds, charge education tax on all tax-paying adults.

It is only in the western part of this country that we hear this talk, the VCs generation benefited from free govt scholarships in the 70s-80s that sponsored many young Nigerian graduates overseas, their children also enjoy scholarships yet she makes this irresponsible statement.

She forgot that when missionaries came here decades a go to set up schools and universities the idea was to make education available to all.

Education is a basic right to every child, thats why it is subsidized and co funded, it is only greedy people that say its for the right, mind you not all learning of life is obtained from the university, you still have to graduate from he school of life. angry
Re: Education Is meant for those who can afford it(picture) by Nobody: 2:59pm On Jan 26, 2016
This money conscious approach to education only emphasizes PAPER qualification and no true learning, graduates from theses schools have no skills to fit into society.

They produce mechanical engineers who cannot fix cars or have basic idea of small machine repair.

They produce electrical engineers who cannot change a dead bulb in the house but prefer to wear suits and sit in air conditioned offices all day.

The produce land surveyors who cant read compasses, of navigate with a map and medical students who dont value life.

Its all about churning dumb graduates with certificates who arent employable or qualified to work as apprentices.

Its all scammers talk.
