Correct me if I'm wrong but I think it was a character in Chimamanda's novel that made that statement and not chimamanda.

I've been wondering though. Is there a distinction between what a person says and what a character in the person's book says?

What do you think?
It wasn't a quote in the book...it was the writer's description of Nollywoood and it was a very direct statement.
Yes, there is a distinction... though more often than not the writer uses the characters' actions and words to convey his/her own view.

The truth is bitter but the lady is right,Nollywood is even worse than Hitler sef.

It's either they are busy portraying how Nigerians use juju to do evil or how a lazy man will use his mother and father for rituals or how a whole family are very poor and wretheched in the village etc. Now tell me isn't that worse than Hitler?

Nollywood and their useless crappy storylines should shut the fuckup abeg.

I also don't like Ghanaians and their useless ugly bitches.

Just like the Nigeria project, there is just no progress in Nollywood, 1 good movie and 200 bad movies. 1 step forward, 100 steps backward. We are still stuck in the medieval era, thinking like cavemen. All we do is attack, attack and less thinking.
This lady just said the truth, sure we not used to hearing the truth.

Exactly!

Personally, I don't see much wrong in what the lady said. Yes, it might rightfully hurt people in Nollywood, but that doesn't negate the facts.

FACT: Nollywood comes with more negative connotation than positive (the average Nigerian admits this daily).
FACT: Her Hitler analogy is just that.. an analogy. It doesn't equate Nollywood with Hitler, it only draws a parallel on the effect of 'tainted' names.

This kind of "soup no sweet, but im mama like am" mentality is why production value/quality has not improved in Nollywood for decades. Nollywood now has full access to the same equipment used in making many Hollywood blockbusters, but look what they produce with it. It's not about the budget, it's about craft.

Compare Nollywood visual production to the Nigerian music video production and you'd realize Nollywood filmmakers have been left in the past by the newer music video industry in the SAME country.

Some good cinematographers from the music industry like Clarence Peters are starting to explore narrative filmmaking. I feel that's what would eventually bring a visual revolution in the Nigerian movie industry when such talents take the wheels.

The first and most important step in fixing a problem is fully admitting and owning that problem. Until then, denial and mediocrity will reign.
Thank you very much.

Those people making what she said look like beef are the problem with Nollywood.. They are unfit for illumination..

The Ghanaian used Hitler as an analogy to pass a message but Most Nigerian will leave the message and patronise stupidity in the name of standing up for Nollywood. Is it the fault of the Ghanaian that her Nigerian counterparts didnt understand the point she is making? That's! The problem with Nollywood.

Nollywood needs to step the fvck up...

Yes, there is a distinction... though more often than not the writer uses the characters' actions and words to convey his/her own view.

Here is the excerpt :

"Ifemelu thought little of Nollywood films, with their exaggerated histrionics and their improbable plots, but she nodded in agreement because to hear..."

Ifemelu is the protagonist in 'Americanah'.

I don't think it's right to assume that this is Chimamanda's opinion of Nollywoood. And I say this because in her famous TED talk "The danger of a single story" she had good things to say about Nollywoood

It's a bit confusing. The direct statement is that Ifemelu thinks little of Nollywood films. One cannot safely say now whether the succeeding description is still part of the character's thought or an external 'widely-acknowledged' viewpoint...
The later holds more truth for me though.

IN her famous TED talk "The danger of a single story" Chimamanda had good things to say about Nollywoood. How do we reconcile this?
Shall we say chimamanda is speaking from both sides of her mouth?

Ms. Adichie disappointingly allows her story to slip to the level of a simple romance, leaving her readers to wonder, not very much, whether Ifemelu and Obinze will be reunited. The plot ultimately feels like an excuse for the venting of opinions — and the opinions carry far more conviction than the storytelling does.
And honestly I am totally with her on the Nollywood opinion. Absolutely. As far as I can remember it, that's about the few of the messages portrayed in the book that I actually agree with.

yes Ghana had a movie industry but not what you currently called "Ghollywood"

Well I am glad you are clear about the first fact brought up. As it is. One thing is common.. Nollywood, ghollywood, kollywood etc. All copied Hollywood the master! So it's been all about copy cat. I believe and hope that in the future someone will come and change that name. Cos it's disgusting and displays a low level of thinking and will
