The acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Ibrahim Magu Tuesday said senior lawyers collect stolen funds to frustrate prosecution of corruption suspects.

Magu said this in a speech delivered to a coalition of Civil Society Groups that rallied to the EFCC Headquarters in Abuja.

He stated that: “One of the big challenges we have in the effective prosecution of the war on corruption is that of very senior lawyers who Nigeria has been very kind to.”

Magu said: “When we have corruption cases, cases of people who have stolen food from the mouths of our children; when we have cases of people who have stolen money meant to build hospitals and buy drugs, when we have cases of people who have stolen all the money meant to buy guns for our soldiers to fight Boko Haram, when we have all these cases of wicked people who have stolen Nigeria's money, they run to these same senior lawyers.”

“Give them part of the stolen money and mobilise them to fight us, to delay us in court and to deny Nigerians of justice. These are the people who do not want justice for the common man,” Magu stated.

He also said: “Corrupt people hire journalists to abuse us every day; they say we are not doing the work according to the law. But, that is not true. There is no agency that follows the law more than EFCC, None.”

Magu said: “Before we arrest you, or seize your property or do anything to you, we check the law; we go to court and get court order. That is why we are winning; that is why we are defeating them every day.”

He further said the EFCC is continuing to recover stolen funds from corrupt people, saying: “The money we have recovered and the money we are going to get back from them -billions and billions of Naira- is being paid back to government.”

He noted that the money will be used to do what it was originally meant for, to build hospitals, send children to school, build roads and railways, create employment and defend our country.

Magu sto been stupid!!! go and make sure you get enough evidence before going to court and then they wont be anything this senior lawyers can do.The current EFCC would not carry out proper investigations but will rather be more concerned with newspaper propaganda and they expect to win cases like that!!! Bunch of nitwit.So you want the Judges to just say these men are guilty because the EFCC says so without conducting any trial!!stupid man

I don't know much about Magu's life history,apart from his detention at one time for seemingly being too diligent in his work,but hearing him talk sometimes gives one the impression of someone that has had some personal family tragedy arising from the corrupt deeds of some pple in high places and is therefore out to bring to book the corrupt and anyone that stands in the way of the corrupt being brought to book.

EFCC is actually puncturing its success chances at the courts with its penchant for media hullabaloo. There is inordinate media publicity around this anti-corruption movement. In addition, its evidence gathering mechanism is terribly flawed. Too many hints flooding the media space even before key individuals involved in such frauds are formally invited or arrested. It is a rash moribund approach that eventually would not recover one-tenth of stolen funds.

Law can be twisting, u need enough balls and brains to untwist it.

D naija constitution stipulates that no one is guilty until proven otherwise by a competent court of law.

Dat mumu can aswell bear himselfwitness that ever since he started growing up as a child that he has not seen where an innocent man/woman is being accused wrongly. Lawyers are created to prove the wrongly accused innocent( I am not saying that those politicians are innocent).


So, instead of this man to be lamenting, he should build a strong case with enough evidence which will put those lawyers defending the criminal into shame and ridicle, if he has not been doing that, then he is not doing his job.

Bring the evidence to nail them, that is what d constitution said. And u can not abide by the constitution, then u are a criminal yourself.

This is very poor from EFCC...apart from the fact that everyone is innocent unless proven guilty, every human being is entitled to legal representation.

this is a big problem we are facing
after stealing our money a lawyer that was trained in nigeria we stand to defend them at the curt of law

Dauda Joseph!! A former NBA president currently defending Saraki, Dasuki and Gabriel Suswam. The annoying part is that he knows next to nothing but specializes in seeking adjournment and delay tactics. Challenge him to do an impromptu address to the court; no way, hey cant; why? because he was never fit to be SAN in the first place.
