As science continues to evolve and newer technologies continue to reshape what we do on a daily basis, it has become ever so important to be good at an engineering field.

Today, software engineers and computer scientists design applications and software for various platforms. Desktop, mobile, server side, etc. We are living in a world where it's more seemingly likely that machines will replace human beings within the next couple of decades.

In this writeup, I wanted to address a few concerns I have for people following an I.T. career path in Nigeria and abroad.

Many engineers and computer scientists I have spoken to on Nairaland seem to have this thought process that they should only specialise in one particular area or sub-field in the ever so vast field of Computer Science and Engineering. However, what some of these people I have spoken to don't understand is that whether you are a Network engineer or Software Engineer or even a Systems Engineer, these positions are interrelated.

Software engineers who are developing server side applications need to understand concepts that Network and Systems Engineers understand in order to write up applications. An example is understanding web sockets.

People who currently work as network engineers need to realise that companies like Cisco are redesigning the way you do things. The Cisco CLI is quickly being phased out in favour of applications that...... That's right you guessed it that SOFTWARE engineers write. It's becoming more and more important as well for Network Engineers to have a strong understanding of Python, Bash and other scripting languages.

Systems engineers are kind of in between. They know some networking concepts and software engineering concepts. However, their main job is to make sure that server load isn't too high on one particular server, the implementation of good load-balancing principles, and the maintenance of servers. System Engineers also write scripts besides the monitoring of servers. Eventually though, with better software engineering implemented on servers. Things like crontab and automated processes will be phased out.

My main goal is to continue to encourage engineers in the I.T. field to learn as much as possible and to not place their eggs in just one basket. Naturally, as an engineer, you should have a natural ambition to learn new things to your already vast arsenal of knowledge. A network engineer with strong software engineering knowledge isn't hurting himself/herself. Same goes for a software engineer with networking knowledge. Many of what we design today requires knowledge of how networking works.

So my fellow Nigerians, I urge you to continue ameliorating yourself. That is something that should never end as a scientist or engineer. We chose a field where we will never stop learning new concepts and things.

That advice for specialization is for new people entering the field. If you are just starting, you can't just decide to learn everything. It's just not possible and you will only know so much but not in-depth. That is why it is advisable to specialize when you are starting. It is only in Nigeria where you see someone claiming mastery in seven programming languages. In developed countries, there is something called collaboration which we don't understand.

You can still specialize and yet study many fields. You never know when something else in one area will apply. You are of course correct that folks will never be able to learn everything, but the most valuable is the person who knows a lot and yet has some specialization.

That thing tire me.....i know a guy that claimed he could write in more than 15 languages.... Just to impress me

I don't quite agree with op, before learning any new stuff master your current area well

What's the essence of learning something new and in a couple of days afterwards, you forget... I believe any knowledge that's not being used on day to day basis is bound for forgetfulness cool

You should try and get a degree in Computer Science or Computer engineering

Getting a network job is not easy even if you are good at Networking with routers and switches. Most people want someone that is experienced and possess a degree in the field (a technical degree in Computer Science, Electrical engineering, Computer engineering, Information technology, etc).

I think you should get involved with software engineering. Most modern cars make huge use of software engineering.

In regards to degrees from India, I have heard that they aren't as valued as one from Nigeria or other former English colonies. This is only hearsay and I could be very wrong. Don't base everything off of hearsay.

Now, if you do your undergraduate work in the UK or the US or even here, you will be fine.

Yes little bro loll I'm in the I.T. field. It's actually good that you learned networking first. It will help you in Software Engineering especially if you are going to write servlets.
