At this very second, there is someone, somewhere in Nigeria trying to cut cost and save money. It could be swapping a Chapman for a bottle of water or taking a bus instead of a taxi, either way, money is being saved. The current global economic crisis has become quite bearing on Nigerian businesses, with services costing more than they usually did in the past. Businesses are faced with higher costs of operation compared to about a year ago. Business owners are now looking for creative ways to cut costs.

Here is a list of online tools that can help startups save a lot of money.

Asana: To save money, many business owners have employees that work remotely. When you have five or more employees scattered across the country, it becomes hard to track their work. There is actually a cost free solution to this problem. Asana is a web and mobile application that enables teams work together virtually. Tasks can be assigned to different employees with different due dates and conversations can be held around different tasks. It is literally a virtual office.

HRIS: HRIS stands for Human Resource Information System. It is a system that allows HR Processes and activities to occur electronically. While some startups still handle HR processes manually, adopting an HRIS can save your startup a whole lot of money in the long run. Good HR Software will help; increase productivity and employee morale, reduced errors, improve employee retention and promote efficient recruitment strategies; which all adds up to lowered business costs.

Wave Accounting: Lackluster accounting can be found in many Nigerian businesses. Many startups do not carefully think about bookkeeping and in some cases, the business owners fail to separate their finances from that of the business. Part of this issue is that many feel accounting is a tasking process that requires an expensive professional (it actually does). However, to cut costs and execute simple bookkeeping, Wave Accounting is a web application that allows businesses keep records of their accounting from any computer with internet access. It separates services, invoices and accounts. It presents simple forms that can allow an accounting novice enter transactions and other financial information, generate invoices and issue receipts of payment.

This list is not exhaustive, as there are so many available cloud solutions providing affordable and free Software As A Service (SAAS) that can allow business owners get more for less. However, the most affordable way to build your business is to engage in personal development. Learn about different aspects of your business, gain knowledge on all facets of your operation and you can finally assist yourself and your business to be efficiently productive.
