The youngest daughter of late Chief Obafemi Awolowo and former Ambassador of Nigeria to Holland, Dr. Tokunbo Awolo-Dosunmu, says Nigeria will experience unprecedented growth if states are granted automony as was done in the first Republic. Addressing journalist ahead of a one day symposium to commemorate the birthday of the late Chief Awolowo, with the theme. “Awo,then and now: Politics,Economics and Education” would hold on March 3,2016 in Ikenne, Ogun State. She said, “It will be regrettable if the resolutions of the 2014 National Conference are abandoned because the recommendations would help us to move forward. One of the issues we need to get right is our federalism. That is first and foremost. Is this the kind of federalism that was bequeathed to our generation? I am not so sure. “The present situation where the states are subservient to the Federal Government is not healthy. I believe that we will do better if, as done in the First Republic, each region is granted autonomy. I feel that the prospects of receiving allocations from the Federal Government at Abuja make people to go to sleep and not to work hard.” Awolowo-Dosunmu also advised South-West governors to emulate the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, by making education more accessible and affordable. - See more at: http://www.duketundesblog.com/2016/02/regional-autonomy-will-speed-up-nigerias-growth-awolowo-dosunmu.html#sthash.rxXYvYqz.dpuf |

We have always know that granting states autonomy will make Nigeria grow. But hope the politicians will allow that? |

Tunami:You are a political-economic illiterate for reasoning along this line. So states controlling theirr resources will lead to breakup of Nigeria |

Unfortunately, only Yoruba asked for this in the national conference, other were out chasing shadows. If we had all asked for regionalism, there's no way on earth we won't at least be having a national conversation about it right now, and we know what that means, a step closer. No! They won't do the right thing at the right time, only for them to come online complaining as if they hate the current arrangement. |

Wyttcat:Only Yoruba? Haba... What was the demand of Niger Delta delegates in 2005 Conference? What was our demand in 2014 Confab? Oga get your fact right... |

What was your demand other than resource control and other things that have nothing to do with regionalism? TonyeBarcanista: |

Wyttcat:What do we mean whenever we agitate for true federalism and resource control? What is the concept and how is it different from what Mrs Awolowo is saying? Is it not about autonomy for states(or region)? |

Regionalism simply means that, but federalism is a system of government which sovereignty is shared by states or by agreement. True federalism will still have the center in control of the police, while regionalism will just have the army with states contributing to it. Regionalism is like handing you a toolbox, and federalism picking out a spanner and a screwdriver. TonyeBarcanista: |

Wyttcat:True Federalism also encapsulate autonomous policing. Well, not to argue, I understand where you are coming from, and I think it is the Spanish/Bosnia model you are looking at. Right? For me, I'm looking at the United States model. |

Even the United States model won't be too good for us because Washington is just too big and powerful. I wish I can go in details but can't right now, it's crunch time for me, and I was just looking for a thread but stumbled on this. Plus a glass of wine already, getting ready to call it a night.
