Following the raging war be tween Fulani herdsmen and farmers in Agatu   local government area of Benue State which has claimed over 300 lives, farmers, under the aegis of Association of Small Scale Agro Producers in Nigeria, ASSAPIN, have sent a Save Our Souls, SOS, to the Federal Government.

ASSAPIN pleaded with the Federal Government to stem the unending attacks and killings of defenceless farmers in parts of the country by suspected Fulani herdsmen. Speaking  in Makurdi, the Benue State capital, at a three-day sensitization meeting on the ‘Right to Food’ Bill, ASSAPIN National Coordinator, Mr. Charles Adu, lamented that the prices of food had skyrocketed due of low yields from farms  occasioned   by  attacks on farmers.

Represented by the Benu State Coordination of ASSAPIN, Mrs. Janet Odejo, the farmers regretted that they   had become endangered species who were killed annually by the invaders and pleaded for government’s intervention.

“Aside the killings we are also losing billions   of Naira worth of farm produce to the activities of Fulani herdsmen, that is the more reason why our call for the building of ranches is apt at this moment,” Adu stated.

“Moreover the crisis is taking its toll on the volume of food  produced in the country and the earlier ranches are built for herdsmen in the country, the better for that sector.”

“Government must also look into the issue of  unrestricted inflow of herders from other West African countries into Nigeria because these group are largely responsible some of the crisis and killings.”

I still can't understand or wrap my head around why the FG has not deemed it fit to make any statement addressing the incessant attacks by these accursed cattle rearers.

It is not clear why no specialised team of investigators and security agents have been deployed to these areas to put a stop to these senseless killings, rape and destruction of properties.

This is why state policing is absolutely important at this time but myopic and evil leaders will not bring this into being.

Most baffling is why the government is being called upon to build ranches for herdsmen...for what? Are they not business men? Or are proceeds from cattle sales rendered into federal account or our new TSA like crude oil proceeds? Do farmers and others engaged in various businesses not bear the cost of start up and maintenance? Is the FG supposed to seize lands and designate them grazing routes/ranches? Are they a more special group than others that require special treatment? Does any trader get shops freely given to ply his trade?

The role of the government us to make available incentives like low interest or interest free loans, access roads and then laws mandating all nomads to settle themselves in their states where they come from within a specified period of time or face sanctions.

How can a sane country sit back and watch cattle herded in the middle of highways with herders brandishing dangerous weapons in plain sight?

Farmers and affected communities need to get themselves armed and ready to defend their homes if these marauders will not desist!
