Good. I hope they equally set up a way this could be effectively supervised and monitored on both the short and long-term basis.
Also, it should be made hassle and stress free. Beneficiaries should not have to beg and lobby to access this. Having sacrificed their breadwinner to ensure the stability and security of the country, the government owe them this at the very least.

change has taken over the Nigerian army...dats very good

such a nice gesture
It is not a nice gesture and there is no change. It is what the government should do and should have been doing. When you have people who lay down their lives for their country on a daily basis, there is no benefit too great for them and their family. The Nigerian military treats it's soldiers like crap. To give you an idea, let me break down what a soldier in the U.S military gets during service;

1. Free health care. Almost free anyway. They pay like $20 a month as health insurance and with that a soldier and their immediate family members can walk into any hospital for something as small as a toothache to major ailments like cancer and get treatment.

2. Free quality education. I have $120k dollars that the army gave me lying dormant in a government account for whenever i decide to use it for my education or transfer it to any member of my family.

3. Paid housing and utilities. A soldier will always get the opportunity to live in the best accommodation possible.

4. Hands on occupational training. When i joined, i had a degree in Public Administration but the army trained me to be an Engineer. This training can be converted into civilian life. The funny thing is, you can be trained for practically anything you ask for and multiple times. You can decide to train as a nurse, then switch over to being a pilot, and then switch over to being a supply manager if you so choose.

5. Life insurance. If you lose your life for any reason other than your own error, (the military will not pay your family if you commit suicide or get in a POV accident and you were not wearing your seat belt) Your family is guaranteed $450k plus a 100k 24 hrs after you lose your life. Plus, your spouse will continue to receive free healthcare and on post privileges until she re marries.

6. The opportunity to lead. The army will groom and train you to be a leader. This is how i know that Nigeria does not and have never had one.

And many more. People who bear the cross of the nation should be treated with respect and honor. This does not happen in Nigeria. The first time i boarded a civilian plane in uniform i was thoroughly embarrassed. I just joined the military and i was not used to the way they do things. The pilot asked that a round of applause be given to service members on board. I started clapping with everybody and noticed that everyone was standing and facing me. It took me a while to realize they were clapping for me. It felt so good. That was the last time i wore my uniform on a plane though. In Nigeria, people want to throw rocks at their service members.

Srop praising people for doing what is expected of them. When someone gives his life in defense of his country, the country (Army) are not doing his family a favour by taking care of them, it's the duty/responsibility of the Country/Army.

Yes it is the least expected of the government, yet in life; there is no harm in praising people when they do what is expected of them - especially if the effort is commendable and good enough.
If it is okay to criticize people for not doing their job, I think it is fair to also praise or commend them when they do. It is all part of motivation and it should be encouraged and practiced by all relationships - at the government-citizens, boss-subordinates, husband-wife levels, etc.

At least this is an area my former boss and my wife has been pressing me to work on - that I should not take everything for granted.

It's partly not their fault. Half of Nigerians are too young to remember when governments actually did it's job quietly and most grew up in the post Babangida era when a govt uses govt money on a govt project and names the project after himself like he is giving the citizens from his own money, like governors naming state transport vans after themselves. It's lead a to a culture where today you see headlines like "Amosun donates computers to schools" "Obiano donates cars to police" is it their personal money?

Responsible countries/govts don't make a song and dance about it. Only in Nigeria do you call the press every time you buy cars for the police, pay pensioners their entitlements or Army widows what is due to them.

Either you don't live in Nigeria or you are not a Nigerian. You are making too much sense and this is not normal.

Praising people for doing their job encourages mediocrity in governance. Praise people who go above and beyond the call of duty or excel in their role as govt officials, not people who are just doing their job, no more no less. This is not the military era, if you like dont do your job, you will be voted out.
Re: Army To Sponsor Education Of Dead Soldiers' Children (Photos) by mctowel01: 2:46pm On Mar 05, 2016
Its a shame that people are congratulating this move. Tho better late than never, its a big shame for this not to have been the norm in the military. I know senators and ministers collect different allowances for their children. What about senators budgeting 4.7 billion for car allowances. Its a stupid democracy we are running. So you mean that such packages have not been available for the children of people who lay down their lives daily for the security of the nation. Shame on us nigerians. I ll still say that Nigerians still deserve to continue with the military regime or better still go back to colonization.

Partly agree. In some cases, you don't have too as it can lead to mediocrity or laxity. In some cases, it isn't a bad idea, especially if its a case where so many have failed or have not measured up before.

Somehow life isn't just black and white, and sometimes, we have to approach issues on a one-by-one basis. In this case, I choose to commend and be hopeful. At the end, the most important thing we agree on is to see it done and for these people to truly benefit.

Lol, for many years, I thought there was something wrong with me for not seeing things as the general masses see it. It took a while to realize that there is a fundamental reasoning problem with Nigerians.

Again, another solid analysis/comment. The scary thing is most Nigerians don't realize that the mentality in Nigeria is really phucked up. The comments on many threads on NL points to this.

If they are sincere it should be for the family of any military personnel or policeman who dies in the line of duty.
