Hello guys,

I'm into web programming. A relative recently called to offer me a job on his new IT firm and my job will involve computer networking.

How and where do I start with computer networking to ground myself to intermediate level.

I permit you to learn it

If you want to learn ask questions. I think you need to start with the Basics though, because Computer Networking is a very vast subject that can be broken up into other vast subjects (like most areas of computing). I would recommend that you buy the ICND1-101 book for the CCENT by Wendell Odom, or find a way to get the ebook for free (most Nigerians probably do this). Build up your Networking skills slowly but surely.

Main things you should take from learning Computer Networking:

1. Having a great Understanding of the OSI Model and how each layer works
2. IP Addressing, Public and Private. Knowing how to subnet is extremely important. Understand what a host range is, a subnet mask is, a Network Address is and a Broadcast address.
3. MAC/Hardware address, know what it is for (goes back to having an in-depth understanding of the OSI model and what each layer represents).
4. Understand various routing protocols and how they are implemented on a WAN. Understand OSPF, EIGRP, RIP, IS-IS, etc.
5. Understand Port-security, Spanning-tree protocol, Broadcast storms, etc. etc.
6. Understand port numbers and what TCP/UDP is

For safe measure, download both e-books from Wendell Odom: ICND1 100-101 CCENT and ICND2 200-101 CCNA. Having a CCNA gives you a pretty decent Network knowledge base. If you have any questions, always feel free to ask.

Fulaman198 I really appreciate your advise.
I'm very grateful.
Thanks alot
