ABS is an abbreviation for Anti-lock Braking System. It is designed to help the you maintain some steering ability and avoid skidding while braking.

Abs means Antilock braking system. This system helps prevent your car from skidding when your brrakes are depressed. If the Abs light on your car is illuminated a message Is being passed across telling you your abs is non functional and would not carry out its function when the need arises. To know the reason why yours is on. Its best you run a scan on your Abs control unit so as to retrieve fault error (s) stored on your car's computer box

It prevents your tyres from locking up(stop rotating) when the brakes are applied(in most cases) suddenly and hard. In other words,it prevents that screeching sound tyres make,improving the ability to control the vehicle.
A vehicle effectively changes direction when the rotating front wheels are steered either to the right or left, not when it is locked up and skids(slides).
