A hijacked EgyptAir plane has landed at Larnaca airport in Cyprus, according to news reports quoting officials and aviation authorities.

The plane, an Airbus A320, was flying from Alexandria to Cairo and, according to Cyprus state radio, one man onboard is thought to be armed.

Around 60 people were onboard the plane, according to aviation sources.

The hijacker of an EgyptAir plane diverted to Cyprus has an estranged Cypriot wife he has demanded to see and who is being brought to Larnaca airport, a government source said.

The hijacker, Ibrahim Abdel Tawwab Samaha, is a professor of veterinary medicine at Alexandria University, where he is Samaha is the head of the department of food health, a staff list on the university website shows, a Reuters report says on Tuesday.

The estranged wife lives in the village of Oroklini not far from the airport, the source told AFP.

Meanwhile, Cyprus President Nicos Anastasiades said the hijacking of the plane to Cyprus on Tuesday is not related to terrorism,

“The hijacking is not terrorism-related,” he told a joint news conference with the visiting president of the European Parliament Martin Schultz.

Anastasiades said the Cyprus government had done everything it could to ensure the safe release of the passengers, most of whom were reported to have been set free.
