In the past #Nigerian Presidents communicated back to Nigerians via official media parleys with representatives from top Newspaper organizations and TV stations physically marshaling the questions. Like a reality TV show, everybody will glue his or her eyeballs to the TV set. If NEPA or today’s PHCN decides you wouldn’t watch by taking your light then you have to spend extra money fueling your generator.

YouTube

Today, the Google acquired $1.65 billion video sharing platform called #YouTube has presented our leaders a much less expensive and more effective communication channel. Social media has often made news contents go viral. It has also given power to the users. With YouTube the people wouldn’t have to do everything possible to watch the parley live in front a TV set because they can always catch up online.

YouTube videos can be assessed by anyone, anywhere in the world so even Nigerians in diaspora can watch the video of presidential press parley from anywhere.

Our leaders have to embrace what information technology has put in their hands. Instead of spending so much organizing these media reality shows, they can have an official YouTube channel like they have on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram. Every time they need to educate or give update on a pressing national issue, they just make a YouTube video that the President, #Minister or #Governor presents the information needed to inform the people. I can bet the video will go viral! The blogs, Twitter trolls will hunt it down. Terrestrial and cable TV channels will download and broadcast at their own convenience without having to yank off programs.

Nigerians will watch from anywhere and anytime even in traffic! They don’t need to depend on PHCN to watch, they don’t need to rush to a TV set because they can watch from a smartphone, tablet or a computer.

The popular #Babatunde Fashola #Power Sector interview is a very good example. Most people who watched it saw it online with YouTube as the landing page. The Minister doesn’t need any formal interview by a TV station or a Newspaper to keep Nigerians up to date on the direction his ministry is taking to give Nigerians 24 hours power supply.

All they need to do is get a YouTube video making team in their communication department, create a YouTube channel and regularly feed the beast! This will help to keep the citizens abreast. It will also kill the rumor monster that feeds the people lies!

With the plenty under 30s assigned to the president's media team I'm very sure this is already a done and dusted affair.

I see nothing wrong with a govt youtube channel if used responsibly and not compromising security.
