AreaFada2:A gastroenterologist is not a surgeon, he is a physician. That is, he doesn't do operations. The so called 'surgeon for digestive system' you made reference to is called a ''general surgeon'' |

Daninya11:When a relative did his, that was the first thing the doctor kept asking him.You should have reported back to the hospital the earliest time you noticed the symptoms. Best bet is to go for a rescan for confirmatory tests. Good luck |

I removed mine in 2009 and ever since, I have never felt unconfortable. I presume that it wasn't done fine. I know a good deal of people that have removed theirs and have never complained of any form of pain. Do the needful by visiting a qualified doctor ASAP because you have left it for too long. All the best, I know you must have been going through a lot. |

Hey @Daninya nice one that you shared this. When you say 'these time' do you mean recently or early during the 5-year Post Surgery period? This is key because it is expected that you should have given feedback to the Surgeon. However, try to visit the General Hospitals and prepare for tests for diagnosis. Also, here is a good read for the medical case: http://www.m.webmd.com/a-to-z-guides/digestive-diseases-appendicitis it may very well help your self analysis as you prepare for check up. Give us an update anytime soon. Cheers. |

Wait! Everyone am getting scared... A lot of people on FP alone are saying theyvhav had their appendix removed. It seems this thing is common. What causes it so I can avoid it from now. Am still a bit young for now |

After an appendectomy, patients are usually handed their severed appendix in a small formalin-filled bottle for keepsake, or as evidence that the operation was actually performed. I had mine for a couple of months before I thought of disposing of it. Besides the pain from the healing suture on my abdomen, I was fine. No stomach pains or rumblings. I began normal activities almost a week after. There has to be a complication in your case. I agree that the indigestion and other stomach discomfort might be as a result of an ulcer. You need to revisit the clinic. And request for your appendix if it's not already to late. Why would the surgeon want to covet your body part ![]() |

thesicilian:You're correct. I meant to say see a gastroenterologist or a GI surgeon. While general surgeons do handle GI surgery, considering its massive scope, in many well-resourced top teaching hospitals, it's a subspecialty work. That may possibly not apply in 9ja though. In this era of robotic surgery, jack of all trade is not good enough anymore. This applies to most surgical disciplines now. I know some orthopaedic surgeons that have only been doing just hip replacement for 15 years now. They won't even do knee. And they have become extremely good at it. |

AreaFada2:Yeah, that's quite true. Jack of all trades is bad for any profession, and more so the medical profession. Abroad you hear of a 22-man surgical team, and one may be tempted to wonder what each person is doing, when here in Nigeria one 'superman surgeon' tries to do the same thing with just one or two other doctors. Its the situation of things in the country currently, but we will get there, though it may tarry. |

Daninya11:The mild pain you experience after drinking water may be due to adhesions (the most common complication of any open abdominal surgery). Unfortunately there is no cure for it. You just have to manage the symptoms with medications, because more surgery increases adhesions. The constipation is due to a number of factors: inadequate water and fiber intake in your diet, lack of exercise or living a sedentary life, stress etc. It is normal to feel sleepy after a meal due to a diversion of blood from the brain to the gut during digestion. That is why most people take a nap after a meal. However dizziness is another issue altogether. If you are nauseated, you may want to check your liver and gall bladder status. A ruptured appendix is a major issue and often presents with complications. As already suggested, see a licenced physician |
