Mothers do have high affection for their children, especially for their male child. Sometimes the attachment for these male children is so strong and difficult to let go, even after their wedding. Recently I conducted a poll, asking married people both men and women, “why the friction between a mother and her daughter in-law?” I got resourceful feedback. Before I continue let me state here that because of the strong bond a male child has with his mother it is difficult for him to disobey or not to grant her request, ladies please don’t try to change that. So from the pool of response I got, I have prepared for you (brides) five (5) ways that will help you be in your mother-in-law’s good book. 1.DON'T TRY TO OUT-DO HER As a wife you can’t separate your spouse from his mother , you just have to manage the situation. The fact that you were married into that family and you have succeeded in displacing her from her position as the first lady in her son’s life should not get to your head. Don’t try to outdo her or compete with her, remember she was there way back before you came. Remember in life there are boundaries; learn not to cross the line. 2.HELP OUT WITH CHORE Many times when my fiancée and I visit my mother, and she sees my mother doing any chores, my fiancée make sure that she takeover the chores from her. When my fiancée is around, my mother doesn’t trouble herself with work around the house. By so doing my fiancée has endeared herself to my mother. In Nigeria, new brides or soon-to-be brides are tested by their characters and her ability to manage the home, others are doing domestic activities, cooking and taking care of her in-laws. So any bride that wants to be in the good book of her mother-in-law should take cognizance of the aforementioned observation. 3.RESPECT In every home respect is paramount, in Nigeria it is extremely important to show respect to your mother-in-law before/after your wedding with her son. Apart from been your mother-in- law, she is way older than you and more experience than you in issue pertaining to family life and keeping a home together. That alone is enough to show her respect. Go to her for advice; tell her your difficult situation with the kids at home, she will put you through because she understands the family more than you do. Ask her for information about her son, you be amazed that tips you got can go a long way to make your home a happy place.
