Iris West is the character not the actress.
The character is not appealing because the script writers and director wanted it that way - if they wanted to zero attention on her they woulda involved her in more dangerous enterprises or punctuated her qualities.

Candice Patton is a top notch thespian or she wouldn't be acting at the highest level of TV drama.
