"I think music in itself is healing. It’s an explosive expression of humanity. It’s something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we’re from, everyone loves music.” ~ Billy Joel

We all love music or maybe some of us. We wake up to it every morning and fall asleep to it every night. It soothes us when we’re stressed and picks us up when we are down or depressed.

For music lovers, wouldnt it be good if we pay a little closer attention to what you’re listening to?
Let's take a look at some of the common music genres.

Alternative/Indie Pop - It is characterised by subversive lyrical content and it is usually cryptic. It is neither " a here nor a there music", it is somewhere in between a metal rock and a punk music.
Instruments used : Acoustic/ Electrical guitar with drums.
Artistes: Twenty One Pilots, X ambassadors, The Fray.

Jazz - It is not a "nodable" music and there is a great emphasis on the instruments used, therefore, it forms (the instrument) the heart of the song.
Instruments :Saxophone, Piano, Acoustic Guitar, Drums
Artistes : Duke Ellington, Miles Davis.

Pop - It refers to popular, mainstream music with emphasis on a catchy melody and accessible style.
Instruments : Drums and your sweet voice.
Artiste : Michael Jackson, Whitney Houston, Madonna.

Metal - An extremely loud music in terms of instruments used while the vocals are drowned.
Instruments : Bass Drums, Acoustic Guitars
Artistes : AC/DC, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin.

Rock - Rock is basically pop with lots and lots of guitars and drums too.
Instruments : Electric Guitars (with distortion), pianos, drums.
Artistes: The Foo fighters, Aerosmith, the dandy Warhols, Muse.

Blues - For blues...., it is hard to tell, lets say a smoother version of pop but with lots of drums, i think.
Instruments : Guitars, Drums
Artistes: Eric Clapton

Classical - It consists of everything classical.
Instruments - vocal, piano, orchestra
Artiste : Beethoven.

Electronic: It involves complex rythymic beats that are produced with "technology" to generate a funky sound.
Instruments : Mostly Keyboard
Artiste: Diplo

Gospel - they always have rigious themes/ expression.
Instruments: A little of any/ every instrument.
Arristes: Don Moen, Tom Inglis, Alvin Slaughter.

These are in my opinion, the basic genres of music with a lot of subs, from the write up, you can deduce my favorite genre, what's yours??

U didn't add:

RAP (rhythm and poetry): combination of spoken words (poetry) either fast or slow and rhythmic beats:

Instrument: voice, piano and drums
Artists: Common, Jay Z, Naz, etc

R&B (rhythm and blues), similarly to blues but with a more defined and repeated beat (rhythm)
Instrument: piano, bass guitars, drums
Artist: R. Kelly, Beyonce, Brandy, etc

Country music now is really different from what we had in the the 80's. Phill collins, vince gill, dan seals, don williams, dolly parton, kenny rogers.. These guy made country a dominant genre those days.

Now take a look at george line florda, keith urban, luke bryan nd the rest of em spoiling country music making it recessive. Taylos swift is the worst.

As far as i'm concerned country music is gone, its changed to folk alternative rock

The same way mainstream pop is slightly different these days from what obtained in the 70s and 80s is the same way country music too has evolved. Evolution is perfectly normal. Besides there are some contemporary country songs that sound just like the old ones - Katie Melua's Just When I Needed You Most comes to mind here; could have sworn the song was Dolly Paton's if I didn't happen to have prior knowledge of the artiste.

For me though, I like the songs of the various eras for what they are - the diversity is very welcome! You can have a playlist that has songs by Scotty McCreery, Sam Hunt, Martina McBride, Kenny Rogers, Don Williams, Allison Krauss, Jason Aldean ... and you just enjoy the music. At times, there's even no difference.

I do assume you are a country purist? Heard some of you guys celebrated when Taylor Swift crossed over to pop. Lol.

Yh i guess i'm a purist when it comes to country. The old way is better, it was the real thing. You know its country just by the instruments even b4 the vocals. Now its just like hiphop or rock. Maybe that why the artistes arnt making so much waves even with numerous tracks.
.
Yh that Taylos Swift thing, i wasnt that surprised, she was always digressing nd finally found her way out.
.
Hiphop nd rap aint selling as such anymore even Drake nd others have tuned their beats down.

It may soon happen to our Naija gbedu

Good bro. Although I have been looking for someone who can properly teach me Nigerian music genres and give me specific instances

You do a great injustice to African music tho. You didn't mention afrobeats and juju.

Afrobeats is my very favorite genre!! I can smell it from afar away. Am sure I can give sub genres of Afro beats sef. Sub genres that haven't been officially classified by anyone in Nigeria.

For example, Good Time by Kiss Daniel, African waist by Tiwa savage (not the the whole part of african waist tho)

I think the "deviation" happened to most genre of music, it happened to rock. Most genres evolved giving rise to "meaningless" sub genres, but as long as the basics are still there, they'll retain their parent genre.

The thing is that even within these genres, there are sub-genres. In the case of country, you have country pop, country rock, bluegrass, and the likes. Same goes for Rock. Some will tell you Nickelback and Coldplay are not rock bands, yet they are classified in that category. Genre is not a simple black or white thing, that's why you find an artiste like Kelly Clarkson who has rock, pop and country songs credited to her.
