Learning how to speak English correctly starts in primary school and ends in secondary school, you can improve on your vocabulary by either the books you read, movies you watch and of course the people around you. Also family background and environment affects ones fluency. No body teaches you English in the university unless its your course of study.

10) 'I am looking for Funmilayo'...you can't be looking for someone. Instead, say 'I am asking of Funmilayo'. You can only look for what is lost! It happens regularly when people go to check on others. We can only start looking for Funmilayo if she is declared missing! grin

!

Yes you can look for someone.

OP, you don show yourself to be a 1/8th graduate sef! Lol!

You can actually look for someone. Duh!

Ola, something is smelling. Can you hear it...ehen!!! 'HEAR'? English!!!

Seems you concentrated on the HEAR. What is 'Something is smelling' in the 1st place?

One very common one that irritates is eg: Let's make it better for you and I.

It's you and me please!

Logicbwoy:

Number 1), 2) and 10) are all false.

1) Smarting is a verb (albeit not in the right context for what you said)

2) "Showing yourself" is not wrong, especially if "showing your hand" is a commonly used phrase.

10) "I am looking for Funmilayo" is also correct. One looks for things he/she has not seen. Also, "asking for" is not always a suitable or appropriate phrase when actually trying to get someone.

cc Seun, Lalasticlala. How do these threads get to the front page?

Pride of ITK could make people not to learn. Instead of you to humble yourself and learn, you decided to create unnecessary attention!!!

What's your proof that No.10 is not correct?

Yes you can look for someone.
Most English words are supposed to be used appropriately. The verb, 'look', mostly connotes 'searching for a missing stuff or person'. It is not appropriate to use it when you have gone to check on someone but met someone else.

Rapmoney:
I know even educated people commit grammatical blunders sometimes but there are grammatical blunders that are just so outrageous and shameful at the same time, when they come right out of the mouths of supposed 'graduates' from tertiary institutions!

If you have been guilty of the following as regard spoken English, then you have clearly moved from being a 'Half-baked' graduate to a 'Quarter-baked' graduate!!! grin grin

1) 'You are smarting'...I heard a guy at a plaza who claimed to be a graduate saying this! Gush! Being smart is very different from being fast or slick. By the way, there's no verb such as 'smarting' in English language which means the same thing as what this young man was trying to say! cool

2) 'You are showing yourself'...just like the one above, how can someone be 'showing' himself/herself? So human being don turn movie? Na wa o!

3) 'Oya, come and go'...two opposite verbs. You are telling the person to come and at the same time, to go! grin Again, what's the meaning of 'Oya'?

4) 'My body is scratching me'...your body can only itch you and not scratch. You scratch when you use your fingers to stroke a surface roughly! Lol! grin

5) 'My phone is 'more' better than yours...this sentence can surely make you appear a 'quarter-bakie' wink You can't use two comparative adjectives in a sentence! We have good, better, best. When you compare two things, the middle one which is 'better' should be used so there's no need for 'more' which is also a comparative adjective but goes with 'than'. As in 'more than' cool

6) 'Did she went to the market'?...as absurd as this sentence is, I have seen many 'graduates' saying it! Two verbs with past tense form in the same sentence?

7) 'Ola, something is smelling. Can you hear it...ehen!!! 'HEAR'? English!!!

8. 'People has' or 'she have'...'has' is a singular auxiliary verb that goes with a singular subject while 'have' is a plural auxiliary verb that goes with a plural subject.

9) 'They takes people for granted'...this one is common on NL. A plural subject does not go with a singular verb and vice versa. 'Take' is plural and 'takes' is singular which goes with a singular subject as well. Take note of 'They' being a plural subject.

10) 'I am looking for Funmilayo'...you can't be looking for someone. Instead, say 'I am asking of Funmilayo'. You can only look for what is lost! It happens regularly when people go to check on others. We can only start looking for Funmilayo if she is declared missing! grin

I hope these help! We are all learning. It is only a foolish man that takes offence when he is corrected!

Good day!!! cool

You can add yours!

I wish you had put this effort refining our native languages, so we could also learn something new about them. Nigeria have over 370 languages begging for your attention.

By the way, ''Oya, come and go'' and ''you're showing yourself'' are phrases created by Nigerians and there's nothing wrong using them, as long as you're talking to a fellow Nigerian. In fact, if we use them proudly all over the world; like Americans do, it may end up in the Oxford English dictionary as reference to Nigeria. Americans do have so many of such phrases in English dictionaries, and they call it American English.

some graduates would say.'expansiate'when they want you to explain in greater detail. The correct word to use is 'expatiate'. The former is not even in the dictionary.

the major factor behind these grammatical blunders was the environment some graduate met themselves when they were young. consider an environment were people hardly speak English and wen u do that in such environment, they see as been pompous. i am a very gud example

You are wrong! 'Yet' is a conjunction while 'still', in the context it has been used, can still serve its purpose because it emphasizes something. Do a thorough ground work before you claim chief of mistake detectors!

Now, take a look at this: 'I was hot and exhausted BUT I STILL finished the marathon'. Does it mean because 'BUT' that happens to be a conjunction is in the sentence so we should throw away the 'STILL'?

10. You don't "ask of/for", you ask after a person. You can ask of/for things like pencil, book, handouts but you ask after a human being

we r drivin' at d same direction....some sentences r actually correct if it's viewed in literary perspective. so they shud b exclusively utilized where they'r suitable. although english s nt our language but some positions-graduates etc- demand fluency

I don't mean to sound pedantic, but being a student of Literature as you claimed, you need to do better with your writing/typing. Too many abbreviations, no capitalisation... I no it's laziness, but please be conscious of these next time.
