I bet no one ever thought of this until now.

So you have been using your laptops for years

And it is mostly plugged to an electric socket

Now people are wondering, what small cylinder?

Yes that small Cylinder

The cylinder is known as Ferrite Bead.

It isolates the laptop from the electro-magnetic noise that occurs from the waves picked up by the cable, or from the noise in AC-DC converter.

It is a kind of electronic choke

It dissipates high-frequency currents in a ferrite ceramic, and helps make the most powerful noise suppression device! It is called a core, block, or EMI ring.

So, that is what it is all about.

Varistors are responsible for power surge in laptops .

The thing is I use an Acer506 double egded sound laptop. Comes with an in built electronic charger and bystand battery.

I don't need this. As a rich hausa boy.

OP is talking of old model charger. This kind of charger is outdated.

This is like telling us about tube when cars are now running with tubeless tyre.

I have Acer and Lenevo charges here for instance, none of them have your legendary cylinder.

its not surge protector

Its called the Ferrite bead
A ferrite bead, or ferrite choke, is a simple hollow cylinder or bead that is made of ferrite material and that is used in order to suppress or filter the amount of high frequency electromagnetic interference (EMI) noise found in electronic circuits.

Anyway ...it's a very informative and educative write up . Thumbs up !

So what would have happened or gone wrong if these EMI noise isn't filtered out??

Because a laptop is an inductive load with sensitive components in it and the waveform that will not disrupt the performance of this kind of systems is a sine wave. Therefore if there is noise in the waveform of the AC supply charging it, it would have gone through the circuitry in the power pack which consists of capacitors which must have cleared ripples to d best of its ability and the ferrite bead now stands as another phase of removing unwanted noise in the waveform before it is finally passed to the system. Its more like a protective measure. You should give credits to we engineers for our thinking.

well its old technology either way..modern chargers are smaller and thinner now...

Thanks for the very detailed explanation. Did you always know that? Or you just found out?
