I don't know if this has been posted before or if it is an old trick but it only recently happened to me so here goes:

I dey my own jejely for 7 Days Inn, devouring fish and chips when I got an email alert with the subject:

Diamond Transaction Alert [Debit -7,098.55 NGN]

Curiously and fearfearly, I opened the mail to check, saw the details of the 'transaction', and I became livid. For the benefit of those that may not be able to view the image, the contents go thus:

Diamond Transaction Alert Service

Please be informed that a Debit transaction occurred on your bank account.

Kindly find details of the transaction below:

Transaction Details
Account Number : 00********
Description : DIAMOND MONTHLY CUSTOMER DIGEST SUBSCRIPTION
Reference No : 81596777

Transaction Date : 7th-May-2016
As a result of this transaction, the balances on this account would be deducted
on the 10th of May.

from your account every month.

Thank you for banking with Diamond

In my fit of rage, I quickly clicked on the link to cancel the subscription and it took me to a page that asked for my login details. The only reason I didn't provide the details was because I couldn't recall my web login details immediately as they're somewhere on my computer and I was on my mobile phone. Also, I usually login to my mobile app via fingerprinting so I had forgotten my ultra-highly-secure-case-sensitive-and-alphanumeric password over time. Since it was on a Saturday night and the supposed debiting wouldn't happen until Tuesday, I decided I was gon address the issue in the banking hall on Monday morning.

While I was sharing the gist with someone yesterday, it hit me that it might be scam o, but I was used to the typical BVN, ATM shït that I normally get so I didn't feel the need to probe deeper. I decided to do a screenshot and send it to the person I was conversing with when I discovered that I couldn't find the mail anymore. Not in my inbox, not in my trash and I was like, shuuuuu! But then, no biggie, na me and Diamond bank get appointment first thing Monday morning.

But the 'e-fit-be-scam' thought lingered and I decided to go through the browser I used to access the link earlier and fortunately it was still among my list of opened tabs. I opened the page and looked at the address bar, then I saw it. Na pure undiluted and unadulterated phishing scam and my sorry arše would have fallen victim were it not for mild procrastination.

Immediately, the things that shoulda been glaring at first began to fall in place..

1. The notification didn't show my full names. It should address me as "Dear Infomizer", this one didn't.
2. The account number revealed only the first 2 digits! Hello? Who no fit guess am? Diamond only reveals the last 4.
3. Debit alerts are for debit alerts!! Not 'we will debit you on so-so-so day' alerts!! My balance shoulda changed immediately but it hadn't. I also didn't get mobile alert but this one can be excused because Diamond/Airtel don dey fück up of late for that one.
4. The mail was in my Yahoo mail, but I subscribe to email alerts with my gmail (explains why I couldn't find it when I went searching, tho I discovered this later).
5. I usually check the actual sender of the email by clicking on the sender's email but I didn't. When I eventually did, I found this email: sales-ics@kendrion.net...(see 2nd screenshot for what I mean)
6. I be better mumu, albeit temporarily grin

On a good day, I'm a savvy guy when it comes to stuff like this but in one second, all that didn't matter because the phishers played a fast one on my emotions. The anger I felt at that moment clouded my normal judgment, coupled with the noisy environment I was in at that point. No be for this kain economy 7k suppose waka like that and I guess the BVN and ATM format had stopped being as effective as they were. I rest my case here peeps, but please guys, y'all need to be alert 24/7/365 (Excuse the pun).

P.S: I typed from my phone so biko pardon all typos.

Mods, please move to frontpage for all and sundry.

I usually receive such mails from individuals trying to steal my paypal and bank details. I always check the sender email address for confirmation before clicking on links in the mail. And also check the website name after clicking on the link.
