Academic brilliance isnt all about grade. While in school, I decided I wanted to graduate with a 2.1, not because I couldn't make a first class, but because I wanted to develop other aspects of my life: I wanted to be balanced. In all honesty, I gave my academics the least of my time and I still made a 2.1.why I made that decision was because I had lecturers who were retained by my school because they made first class and all I saw in them are people who are just good when it comes to academics and very empty and shallow in other areas of life. We give too much importance to grade in Nigeria and it's bad. Some people are very good academically, while others are not so good but are intelligent in real life situations. Just know where you belong and work more on it. Should I become an employer tomorrow, I won't place much importance on grade, but on what you can do, what you have to offer in real life situations. Let's not forget that some are created with the brain of a genius, while others are not. I made a 2.1, yet, all my stay in school, I never read for more then 3hours in a day, even during exams, maybe that's why I value other aspects of my life more than the grade of my certificate. Guys with 2.2 and lower, just know your strengths and work on them, add value to your life and person and when you come across people who are not superficially shallow, they will value what you've got to offer. And let me say this: if you weren't wired naturally to be brilliant, even if you read 18 hours a day, you won't be more than average, and if you're wired naturally with intelligence, any little time spent reading will yield results. Bottom line: GRADE ISN'T SOMETHING WE BOAST ABOUT. BESIDES THE GRADE, WHAT ELSE CAN YOU BRING TO THE TABLE?

Very correct, my first year in UNI I was doing all that midnight reading BS, read for a million hours and all that shii, omo when I see say the cramming Na oshi, I just made a quick reverse and started reading everyday for 4hrs. Every freaking day to understand the concept and ideas behind every topic I was taught. Many people that come out empty after school are those who crammed. They read just to get it floating in their brains until they can pour it out. This is what makes students seem to not know much after graduating. Plus some lectures don't appreciate personal research and growth, they want you to put down exactly what they wrote in their text books or hand outs(at least was so when I was in school) if you do beyond their power, they do not give you a pass.
But what I do not understand is this..... how can a normal person who has the ability to achieve better decide to aim lower?

Nice one.
But if there is anything I hate to hear that should be "I chose to have 2.1"
For me it's pure lie and it doesn't make sense.
Your write up made sense, but immediately I saw where you wrote that you chose to make 2.1, I stopped reading

Bro, that's your opinion and I respect that. Well, like I said, it was a very conscious decision and that's because I knew I had other things to do and I wouldn't have all the time to dedicate to my academics. And I must say my decision paid off. Before graduation, I became an android and Windows Os guru, I was the goto-guy in school, in fact I became an unofficial consultant. My friends in other departments who dedicated their lives to making a first class told me to my face, that they wish they had put their time into other ventures, just like I did. Like I said, if I could give my academics the least of my time, and graduate with a 2.1, then I could easily have graduated with a first class with a little dedication, but that I knew I couldn't give and like I said in the first post, boasting about brilliance isn't my thing, I just gave my life experience, and that's to encourage those who couldn't make a 2.1. Now, tell me what's inspiring, when a first class graduate from my department who was retained to serve, comes to class with senior lecturers to have lectures with us, said and I quote "while I was in school, I just read(crammed) to pass, now I have come to study and understand"? BOTTOM LINE: THE LIVES WE LIVE ARE A PRODUCT OF OUR CHOICES, WHETHER DIRECTLY OR INDIRECTLY.

It's all about choice bro. The truth is, not everyone is a big fan of academics. You've got to be with an aspiring first class student, to appreciate the time and dedication they give to reading. That in itself requires love and passion, and didn't have that for academics. I had so many other aspects of my life to work on. I wanted to be balanced, I wanted to be attuned to real life challenges. And most importantly, I never had passion for reading or cramming. For example, I could sit down in front of my computer for 24hours without breaking a sweat, but can't read for two straight hours without taking a walk.

Bros, your first class or 2.1 can only get you an invite for a job interview and not guarantee you any job. I have seen a person who struggle hard to graduate with very good grade, and landed a job after 2 to 3 month he finished serving. He spent just 15 month on the job before he got sacked by the company. he read accounting but never had experience of working as an accountant. For over a year now he has not gotten another job. Very simple terms in account now is a big problem for him to explain and analyse (debit and credit question) up til now, he has not gotten a job.
What i'm trying to let you understand is that, 1.1 or 2.1 can never guarantee you job except you have something to offer. I swear, majority of graduate with good grades has nothing upstair. They only crammed to pass the exam, and after the exam everything will disappear from their skull. Did you think that kind of certificate can get that person a job? Some wrote exam and pass but they dont know the meaning or how to apply it to real life.
I understand that having good grade is good, but boasting as if is a tickect to get automatic employment is bad
You know, there might be other reasons why he was sacked apart from his lack of academic prowess?

And perhaps you that graduated with either a Second Class Lower or Third Class while being so brainy up there used "Has" instead of "Have", "Struggle" instead of "Struggled" and "i" instead of "I". I don't support boasting about grades because it is never a determinant of success, but don't come here and tell us that "Majority of First Class or Second Class Upper graduates have nothing upstairs". Sometimes, it's all about interest. They may have crammed all through their time at the university and might not be able to answer some simple questions in their course of study, but on closer examination, there is always something which they are good at: something where they have everything to offer. The same principle applies to the Second Class Lower, Third Class and Pass graduates. The guy in questioned that was sacked should find out his passion and how to make a living from it. My half cent!

No one hates 1.1 and 2.1 students as much as nairalanders. You hear them say not all 1.1 really deserved their class of degree. Yea, I agree. But then graduating with a FC shows that person is committed, hardworking and ready to use all means necessary in other to achieve a goal which is in it self a redeemable quality- one which every employer would kill for. Or would you rather have someone who claims to be really good but is not hardworking enough to deliver the goods right on time? I'm an FC student. I'm not taking a this stance to defend myself though. I've seen many 2.1 or 1.1 students who couldn't even do a simple class presentation in simple correct English. The same guys are wizards in engineering mathematics and the likes. It doesn't take anything away from their quality and genius.

Everyone can't be perfect. - write or speak Queens English to prove their talent. I just think when someone graduates with a good result society places a target on their back, looking for a weakness to make a meal off. This attitude is in it self umhealthy.

Someone once stumbled on my documents and saw my passing out grade and next thing he was ranting about how no one dead or living has graduated with an FC in the same department in his school. Few weeks later on the news, I watched the best graduating student with an almost impossible GPA from that school march to the podium in flurry of applause.

People would always find a reason to play down on others achievement. While I admit an academic result may not be a true reflection of a person ability, I believe those who managed the feat should not be persecuted but encouraged.

We are all in this rat race together irrespective of our class of degree.
True that!

Its just a harmless question and never intended for mockery.

I notice that whenever one mention in his comment that he graduated with 2.1 or first class, he will usually be faced with so many ridiculous and mockery comments especially from those that graduated with 2.2 and below
You will be seeing things like

**who first class EPP

**If they don't say that, they will start reminding you that first class and 2.1 does not give job, connection gives job
**Another thing they say is this, first class ko, 2.1 ni, come to FUTA and know whether you go even smell 3rd class
**Another thing they do is scrutinizing your write-up for any possible error so that they will use it against you to prove that your 2.1 is meagre

**Another set of people will keep on yelling like PDP supporters telling you that most people that graduated with 2.2 are practically better than those that graduated with first class. That first class and 2.1 are empty vessels and robots who are only good in cramming
Who asked you?
If you are as good as you claim, why you no make first class?

Now I ask, why the so much HATE ON FIRST CLASS AND 2.1 GRADUATES?

This world is small, it will not benefit anybody if the hate continues

lets change our mentality and see everybody as one and stop this unnecessary hatred.

But if you decide to hate, na for your pocket.

your uni grade is a reflection of how studious you where in secondary school. I started taking my studies so serious in the university, I studied so hard in the uni but still ended 2.2. Most times spending the whole night trying to get the gist of a topic. You will end up not getting it. A wasted night. In my course elect engineering, every thing is built round your o-level physics, maths, further maths, chemistry. If you are not grounded in them b4 getting into the uni..2.2 na your case no matter how hard you try, except you are genius.....but Nigerian sha, na dem go blast graduates who does not have real work contribution in respect to their field, na dem go still give 2.1 condition for employment..you hardly get a person who has passion for academics and practise.. my recommendation: 2.1 and 1st class should be restricted to academician (lecturers), while firms should be more interested in skills. IMO

Just making you understand that First class is not a function of being a genius.. Whether you said so or your VC, but of you need to correct that assumption... There are lots of third class graduates that are better than all the first class put together.

I chose to cos I don't want to be a first class student. What's in it being a first class student?

Its people like you that makes people like us spit hate words on first class students...
It is "both of you" and not "but of you". Your genius brain should have told you that typing with shorthand is the worst you can do to your English vocabulary.

You can lie to others but stop lying to yourself. I hope you don't really believe that trash about graduating with a 2:1 cause you didn't want to graduate with a first class.

I wouldn't want to quote you again so I'll just state this: "I graduated with a second class upper, 4.04 to be precise and it hurts a lot to know that i didn't graduate with a first class".
