The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has detained a former Minister of Finance, Amb. Bashir Yuguda, over his alleged involvement in the $115m (N23bn) bribe which was distributed by a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Diezani Alison-Madueke.

The EFCC said in a statement that the ex-minister who is a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, allegedly diverted N450m out of the money.

This doesn't look right to me. What if the court finds him innocent of the charges?

The EFCC cannot arrogate to itself the right to determine guilt or mete out punishment for ALLEGED and unsubstantiated offences. We are not in a Banana Republic. We must learn to do things right in this country. This arbitrary gra-gra approach that emphasises media frenzy as opposed to judicial processes would definitely not achieve any meaningful result.
