There is a problem with this topic. Muslims do not have a figure like a Pope who is the head of all Catholics in the world. He is what he is: Dr. el-Tayeb, who is the current Grand Imam of al-Azhar - so there is no point in glamourizing what is not. Even he is not the highest authority on Islamic matters in his country not to talk of other countries. Stop misleading poor folks.

They are correct to say that considering the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar is a Sunni Title given to the highest authority in Sunni Islam and since Sunnis represent the majority of the Islamic population out there, the description is correct! You might also know that the Shia's version is the Grand Ayatollah.

The Islamic cleric has many issues to fix in the subcontinent, now that boko haram has metaphosized to ISWAP, trying to cover west Africa and operate like ISIS, ISL among others.

Stop saying what you don't know! I'm not here to argue with you, all this information is publicly available on the internet! There is hierarchy in Islam, it has existed since the time of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). They probably should have rephrased the title better such as " One of the top figures in Islam" but don't underestimate the influence of the Grand Imam, like I said before he is equivalent to the Grand Ayatollah(Marja) both are considered very powerful in the Islamic community!

I am muslim first of all.

Point is this, there is no religious hierarchy like the pope to be called 'the most important muslim figure in the world'. He is an honored man, a leader of a sacred mosque, a scholar who occupies an important position of knowledge but the title was embellished and that is what i point out.
