I really fear inferiority complex for Nigerian nurses. I might be wrong but with the way they rub shoulders with doctors is alarming. The few nurses I know are always saying negative things about doctors, but the doctors are know are busy studying for one exam or the other. What's a paradox.

Why is it so hard for people like nairalanddotorg who do copy and paste to at least take sometime to format what they copied before finally posting it?

After having a confrontation with someone, a nurse once boasted saying "this man does not know me, I'm a nurse, we decide who survives and who dies in the hospital, if I decide to deal with him, he won't believe what he'll go through". Recounting how mean and rude they were to my mother back then at ABU teaching hospital, I find it very hard to tolerate their excesses. They are always not well trained and like someone mentioned in an earlier post, most of them go into the job as a last resort when all hope is lost, or when they are not mentally capable of studying any other rigorous profession.

Nursing used to be "it" until people started running into it for stable cash flow. There are way too many Nigerias into Nursing abroad. Why? Please don't tell me that Nigerians are compassionate. Please! The compassionate aspect of it has come into qiestion in recent times. A lot of nurses already have their pay days marked on a calendar. But if you come across a humanitarian nurse, you will love the profession.

Life is generally unfair though but most of the people spoiling the profession are not professionals,Nurses are kind, they alleviate suffering,promote health and wellness.

ironically these are very true questions and apply to most nurses one way or the other. Especially question 1, hardly would you find a nurse who hadn't tried to first become a doctor yet they would volte face and chin up whenever they encounter a us.
You guys should take a chill, be happy where you find urself and let's work as a team.
@no 9: soo very true, that's what you get when you spend the better part of your days in the hospital. Ironically I don't have a thing for dating my fellow health profs, even my fellow doctors. Just me though, they say I'm odd and weird.

I don't know where you got your statistics from, but most of my colleagues had nursing as their first choice, including me. You guys like to live with the delusion that everyone wants to be a doctor. I wrote jamb twice, never for once did i apply for medicine. Same goes for many nurses i know. Those who even applied for medicine only did so for economic reason. Funny thing is in my uni back then, there are more applications for nursing than medicine. It is harder to get into nursing

There is no exception here sis, even the ones in private hospitals are the same, they only comport themselves @times for fear of being sacked immediately by the hospital management.

After watching scrubs, greys anatomy and hearing from some of my aunts that are nurses abroad, I had wanted to marry a nurse, but as I grew up and had many encounters with them, I come to detest them, even the naija set of doctors that carry themselves as if to say na God dem be.

How can you say "There is no exception here Sis"?

FYI, I Have never had a patient complained about how badly I cared for him/her, in fact they are always finding ways to stay in touch with me afterwards. I know few patients and their relatives who are studying nursing right now cos of their encounter with me. I also know many nurses that are like and even better than myself. The new generational nurses are having sleepless nights because of the bad public image of nursing in Nigeria, Nursing World Nigeria readily comes to mind.

Please, don't be in a haste to generalize on an issue next time, bad generalization is an issue we have been battling in nursing (especially in Nigeria).
Of course, many are speaking from series of bad personal experiences. Nevertheless, there is an ongoing in-house cleansing to give y'all the very best in the nearest future. Renew your faith in us, Nursing shall get it right someday.

I remember my days in med skl,wen i had a nursing roomie..She was abt starting her preclinical courses(anatomy,physiology etc) & was asking of textbooks she could buy..I showed her d ones I used and in my honest opinion told her to ask her senior colleagues for the ones they specifically use(there's mathematics txtbook,engineering maths,statisics maths txtbk etc) cos dere myt b some career-specific data & differences.....
Na so I take find trouble...started talks on how dere is no difference in syllabus,who's more superior and all dat rubbish..
Well that was one in a million nurses,with serious complex issues..

we make it possible for the doctors to
do their jobs at all.
When something goes wrong… who do
you think is going to be next to you
first?

3. ‘What’s happening to…?’

Think about it for a moment. Would you
want us to go telling your neighbour all
about your medical care? I doubt it.
Please don’t ask us: we can’t possibly
explain, and having to tell you that is
slightly embarrassing… if not for you,
then definitely for us.

4. ‘Can you score me…?’

Just because you’ve seen Gregory
House mainlining vicodin like it’s water,
and Nurse Jackie slipping oxycodone
into her scrubs pockets… doesn’t mean
that’s what healthcare professionals
can actually get away with.
Not to mention the fact that it’s more
than just a little bit illegal. (Yes, we
watch those shows too. Apparently, we
just can’t get enough of it…)

5. ‘Anyone can be a nurse.’

Yep, anyone can make it through a
numeracy exam and a formal interview
before even being offered a place at
university.
And anyone can to get through three
years of university education, spending
50 per cent of their course doing the job
of a nurse, while collecting a bursary
that might barely add up to a third of a
qualified nurse’s salary.

And anyone can do that while also
writing essays and revising for exams,
before getting character references to
prove they are in fact a good enough
person to enter this workforce that’s
being cut left, right and centre despite
the opposite being needed.

6. ‘I mean, all you do is empty urine
bags and bring dinner, right?’

Well, no – there’s also the handling of
controlled drugs, measuring what your
vital organs are up to, looking out for
things going wrong. And if they do,
knowing what to do about it if there’s
no doctor around.
Someone will be watching over you
24/7, making notes, ensuring that
everything is documented so that no
matter who’s in charge of the next shift,
everybody knows how well you’ve been,
how well they should expect you to be,
and how quickly to react if something
seems to be changing.
If there was one right thing said on
Nurse Jackie, it was this: ‘Doctors
diagnose. Nurses save lives.’
Sure, the doctors do a lot of hard work.
But they make their decisions based on
what we tell them.

7. ‘What’s taking so long?!’

Any number of things: the other patients
that you’re here on the ward with. A
phonecall from a concerned family
member. A visitor asking if they can
take their relative off the ward for some
fresh air and a coffee.
Making notes about your care.
Concentrating on making sure I don’t
give someone the wrong kind of drug or
the wrong amount.
Again, our job is far more complicated
than it probably looks!

8. ‘Hellooooo, nurse!’

Yes, yes, the sexy nurse trope. We
know. But really?
Our uniform looks like pyjamas, and
we’ve just been cleaning your urinary
catheter.
Even if it wasn’t gross professional
misconduct to have a fling with a
patient who thinks we’re hot… we
probably don’t feel terribly attractive in
scrubs, and it’s very unlikely we’ve got
a thing for someone who we’ve seen in
that situation…

9. ‘Do you only date doctors?’

Whilst I’m sure it’s true that some
nurses get into relationships with co-
workers, those nurses who do feel
they’ve got the time and energy for a
relationship almost certainly don’t want
to be going home to someone they see
at work…
Who wants to hear about medicine over
breakfast, lunch AND dinner?

10. ‘Why don’t you just smile?’

We work long hours, we listen to the
things on this list every day, constantly
feeling like our profession isn’t
respected at all, and it’s been days
since we properly sat down with our
families.
We’re overworked and short-staffed,
and sometimes, we just want to sit
down and cry. But we keep on keeping
on…

11. And lastly… ‘I’m just a nurse…’

Yeah, that’s right. This one goes out to
all the other nurses out there.
If there’s one thing I hate hearing more
than anything else, it’s nurses putting
themselves down.

This niggas post been flooding front page lately

Nurses dey try sha. Nurses and midwives do so much.... My kids were born in three different hospitals and every time it was only the nurse/midwife that handled the delivery. The doctors only came if there was a complication. Even then, they just looked and told the nurses what to do and they left.

Seriously I hail Nurses, you people try no be small, especially the kind and patient ones.

As for all those wicked and frustrated nurses, God is watching you and you will reap your reward, una no worry.

Whatever grudge you bear for nurses especially in Nigeria, remember they are products of their environments. Every facets of Nigerian professionals behaves worse than nurses.
If every nurse around you has bad attitude, then I think you have to reevaluate yourself maybe it is coming from you.
Actions and reactions are always equal and opposite.

Ppl will keep on hating but fact remains that nurses are caring. Imagine rendering absolute care to a total stranger for a very poor pay...yet these same patients have the gut to insult u. I salute the patience and courage of guys in this profession.
