This is nonsense. Even abroad farmers are subsidized to keep food prices low. They even have tax breaks. This foolish minister of agriculture better know what he is doing. Scarcity of food is the fastest way to bring a government down. No to removal of subsidy on agricultural products. 1 Like |

Tolexander: Dont deceive yourself, if Buhari wanted to diversify into agriculture he wont make the budget for agriculture lower than what it was last year. He simply said it because he told the governors to do so, so that they wont bother him for oil money. What a contradictory report. Government say it will remove subsidy but will diversify into agriculture and address food shortages. And they said the previous administration was clueless. At a time whey be say na only yahoo and EFCC boys dey cook rice and stew because of price of tomatoes and bag of rice for market na e Sai Baba wan remove subsidy for agriculture. Its alright................................... 1 Like 1 Share |

Zeusd3:Did the local farmers have access to billions of stolen funds like the otta farmer? Are they not going to pay interest on the loans that they provide them? What if their crops are diseased in a year. Then they are left with loss and unscrupulous banks can seize their properties, in addition to the cost they incur buying fertilizer. This action should not be allowed to happen. In fact people are already feeling the pains of fuel subsidy with increased food prices. Messing with farmers will drive it up higher. Don't play with food at all. Careful allocation of fertilizer should be implemented. And if the issue is importation, fertilizer can be made here in Nigeria of compost, which is rotting food. And provided to the farmers at cheap prices as we cannot afford to enter the era of subsidized products which will be more expensive when farmers shoot up their prices. If only the government will focus on better ideas and not withdrawing thinks without thinking. When the masses are hungry, no security vote will save them. You can be sure that withdrawal of fertilizer subsidy will shoot up food prices. |

I would advice the federal government against the withdrawal of subsidy on fertilizer, as this would increase the farmers cost of production, resulting in the further increase of food products.it is common knowledge all over the world that agriculture is always subsidized.Subsidizing agric inputs is far better than given farmers credit 1 Like |

Keneking: Bro,I am APC supporter but this is pure nonsense nd another way for the Masses to suffer. Dnt tell me that u don't know that the price of food has increased than b4.Now,the FG has removed subsidy on fertilizer. What will then happens to the price of food in the market?? Definitely the price will increases again nd Masses suffer more in the future coz the price of food will increases automatically in the long run. commercial farmers with High level of labour will reduce the number of labour coz they wil spend more money on fertilizer than before (boost unemployment in Labour market). You have no iota of reason to praise PMB on this useless nd barbaric decision. The excuse from the minister is not enough for FG to remove the subsidy on fertilizer. Hike in electricity tariff, Hike in price of goods, Subsidy is no more on oil, Subsidy is no more on fertilizer to boost production. Tell me why u dey Laud's this as an achievement?? During this one year of PMB led government.Am highly disappointed in him.I cnt even bliv I can against PMB on this forum. Can u pls tell me the dividend's of democracy when the government keep on remove subsidy on primary needs??. 2 Likes 2 Shares |

Checked86:.. with all due respect sir..am not sure u know anything about agricultural policy formation neither have you been following any in Nigeria... subsidy on fertilizer by the then ATA.+Agricultural transformation agenda) was closely monitored by the then administration to curb the activities of those sitting at the office that might want to divert the whole money into their pocket by introduction of e-wallet ....so my brother just admit this present admiration is just clueless... 3 Likes |

Fertiliser Subsidy: How Nigeria Short Changes Farmers OCTOBER 3, 2013 "Abubakar Jibrin is a young farmer in Kumo town of Gombe State in Northern Nigeria. During the last Ramadan season in July-August, while other Muslim faithful fasted and prayed, and rested from the scorching sun, he pedalled his bicycle to Kembu, six kilometres away to receive two bags of fertiliser which government allocated to him at a subsidised rate. Jibrin has about two hectres of farmland where he plants rice, maize, millet and groundnuts, and requires between about six bags of fertiliser to nourish it. At the market price of N6,000 per bag, he would need N36,000 to purchase the volume of fertiliser he requires. Early in the year, when he heard about a new federal government fertiliser subsidy scheme which would enable him buy two bags at N2,750 each, Jibrin quickly joined the queue to register. Months later, he got a text message telling him his subsidised fertiliser was ready. But he had to travel 6 kilometres to redeem it. Even though he was fasting, religiously, he rode his bicycle to Kembu. But he got no fertiliser even after undertaking the journey three times. “I went there thrice, from here to Kembu about 6 kilometers, on bicycle. But whenever we got there, we discovered that the workers had not arrived,” he said. “Even when they come to distribute, they don’t follow the queue. They will just be giving the fertiliser to people outside the queue….even if they are not registered farmers.” Frustrated, Jibrin stopped going to Kembu for fertiliser and was forced to buy a few bags at the market price of N6,000 each. Babajide Awoyelu, a farmer in Kajola Ijesha in Atakumosa West local government area of Osun State in Southwest Nigeria, had a similar experience. In February, he registered under the Growth Enhancement Support (GES) scheme. He received an SMS alert in May to go to Osu to collect two bags of fertiliser for N5,500. Awoyelu went to the redemption centre several times but always went home empty handed. “They promised to give us two bags of fertiliser, vegetables seedlings and chemicals but they kept on saying the items have not been brought to them. I stopped going because I saw they were deceiving us,” he said. Jibrin and Awoyelu are just two of many Nigerian farmers who registered for the GES scheme but got no fertiliser during this year’s farming season. The scheme was introduced in 2012 by the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development to provide subsidised inputs, including fertiliser and improved seeds, to farmers. Under the scheme, the federal government subsidised fertiliser by 25 per cent and the state governments are expected to add another 25 per cent subsidy so that farmers could purchase at N2,750 per bag instead of between N5,000 and N6,000, which is the market price." The whole fertilizer subsidy thing was a scam, the fertilizer trucks were bought by rich business men and diverted as farm as Sudan , Mali. The Government can offer other support like loans, agro insurance , enhance seeds , storage and mechanized inputs. |
