Top 9 Players Jose Mourinho Will Send Packing From Manchester United by Nobody: 7:52pm On May 23, 2016
Mourinho will undoubtedly make significant changes to United’s squad ahead of next season as he looks to ensure that the club will be able to challenge for the Premier League title.

In addition to bringing in new players, the Portuguese will also be sanctioning the departures of some of the existing members of the squad.

Here are several United players that could move on this summer.

#9. Ashley Young

Young has been used in all manner of different positions by Van Gaal – out wide, at left-back and even up front – but the 30-year-old has often struggled to make a significant impact when he’s featured over the past couple of seasons.

When Mourinho assesses the United squad Young, for whom United are already willing to consider offers, will likely be a candidate to depart, particularly when it is taken into consideration that the club could find an upgrade on the former England international in the transfer market.

#8. Michael Carrick

Carrick is an experienced, dependable performer and would surely be valued by Mourinho, but the midfielder is out of contract this summer and is set to be allowed to leave Old Trafford.

The departure of the 34-year-old, who is being targeted by West Ham United, would allow Morgan Schneiderlin an opportunity to establish himself as Mourinho’s first-choice defensive-midfielder.

In terms of incomings, Louis van Gaal had been set to push Man United to pursue Leicester City’s N’Golo Kante. However, should Mourinho replace him the Portguesse may target a bigger name, a stance more closely aligned with Ed Woodward’s thinking.

#7. Adnan Januzaj

Having previously appeared on course to make the breakthrough at United, Januzaj’s development has not exactly gone to plan this season, with the Belgium international having endured a frustrating loan spell with Borussia Dortmund before struggling to get much of a look in under Van Gaal in the second half of the campaign.

Mourinho isn’t renowned for giving young players a chance to prove themselves, and Januzaj’s lack of physicality could cost him his place at United, with the winger having won just 30% of his duels in the Premier League this season.

Januzaj has made just five league appearances overall for United this season and only two starts.

#6. Marcos Rojo

Rojo’s two years at United have been blighted by injury problems, while the Argentinian’s cause also hasn’t been helped by the fact that he has frequently been deployed out of position at left-back.

Perhaps Rojo would be more effective if he was used at centre-back but Mourinho, who places a strong emphasis on an organised back line, may not be entirely convinced by the 26-year-old.

Rojo has made 16 appearances in the top fight for United this campaign and Luke Shaw’s return from injury could see his usefulness to the side diminish even more after the summer.

#5. Marouane Fellaini

A strong, physical presence in midfield, at first glance Fellaini might appear an ideal fit for a Mourinho side, but the Belgian’s lack of assurance in possession could count against him.

Fellaini was also successful with just 37% of his attempted tackles in the Premier League this season, while he struggled to make much of a contribution in an attacking sense either as he created just eleven chances.

It is understood that United have been actively trying to sell Fellaini, offering him to multiple clubs, with Serie A side Napoli among the intersted parties.

#4. Victor Valdes

The experienced goalkeeper is poised to leave United regardless of who is in charge next season. Valdes’ time at the club has been nothing short of a disaster, with the Spaniard making just two Premier League appearances before being frozen out by Van Gaal.
Mourinho is likely to keep faith with United’s current crop of goalkeepers, with Sergio Romero acting as back-up to David De Gea.

Valdes spent with Standard Liege this season, from January to April, but his loan deal was cut short.

#3. Phil Jones

Not too long ago Jones appeared destined for an incredibly bright future for club and country. However, this season has effectively been a write off for the defender, who made just ten Premier League appearances and was left out of England’s Euro 2016 squad.

Jones will be eager to re-establish himself in the United side next season, but Mourinho faces a difficult decision regarding whether to persist with the 24-year-old.

Jones started only eight league games this season but was given several run-outs with the reserves over the final two months of the season.

#2. Juan Mata

Mourinho allowed Mata to join United when he was in charge of Chelsea, and the Spaniard could be forgiven for feeling concerned regarding his future prospects with the 53-year-old in charge.

Mata has been United’s most effective player in a creative sense this season – he has laid on 53 chances for his teammates in the Premier League – but he struggles defensively and doesn’t possess the requisite work-rate that Mourinho demands of his players.

Even under Louis van Gaal, Mata hasn’t always been a regular starter for United this season and his chances of featuring prominently would be reduced further under Mourinho.

#1. Andreas Pereira

Widely regarded as one of United’s best prospects, Pereira has grown frustrated at his lack of playing time at the club, particularly with regards to Van Gaal’s decision to block a loan move for him in January.

Pereira recently told Goal: “I wanted to be loaned out in January in order to play more and to keep developing myself, but Van Gaal told me that he did not want me to be loaned out. He told me to stay in Manchester because he would use me and that I would play.

“I told him that was fine, and that if I could stay and play then I would. He did not let me leave. I took the decision and now I’m training, doing my job and waiting for him to fulfil his word.

“Of course I expected to play more. I think that I deserved the chance. I did well in the games that I had the opportunity to play, but football can be like that.

“My manager has not given me this opportunity yet and I will keep working hard, waiting for the chances. If they’ve not come this year, then maybe the next, but I’ll be ready. I’m very calm because everyone sees that I’m playing well and that I deserve my shot.”

Mourinho – with his track record for shunning younger players – may still not be prepared to throw Pereira into action next season, and could well allow the prospect to depart.
