SOMETIMES UCL is used, most especially this days. check very well, all that is required is an outstanding player in the club needs to perform credibily well both domestically & otherwise to stand a chance. Wesley Sneidjer won everything domestically with Inter Milan under Jose Mourinho, did well at 2010 worldcup but he was not awarded, instead Messi won it. but this remains mystery to me till date. Also perenial tournament like world cup, Euro or biennial tourney like copa America, maybe CAF nations cup is used. Don't say Messi was a CLEAR Fovourite as at 2010, cos saying so means you are not being fair to Wesley Sneidjer who as an attacking midfielder has managed to score 41 goals & handful of over 20 assist in all competitions(individual performance) for Inter Milan that year. Though he may not have scored lot of goals as Messi due to his role playing behind 2strikers. I think he deserve it. He won more silverware(TREBLE) than any Barca player, he scored 5 goals & won 4 man-of-the-match awards at the worldcup where got a silver medal that same year under review.
In my own opinion, Messi deserve every other ballon d'or, as for that 2010 Wesley Sneidjer deserve it.

You agree with me yet you want to disagree with yourself. I named up to 10 matches where they didn't win where they actually needed him but where was he? He was nowhere to be found so unless you explain to me where he was in those matches you still don't have a point there.

It was Diego Milito who was scoring all the goals for them, Sneijder with the assists, that's why people argue that their win was more of a collective effort. I don't know if he had up to 20 assists but I do also know that Messi had the highest number of assists that year. The true contenders that year were Xavi and Iniesta.
