Calabar – The Hausa/Fulani community in Cross River has appealed to Gov. Ben Ayade to allocate a portion of land to herdsmen in the state in order to enable them graze their cattle. Mr Sani Baba-Gombe, Leader of the association in the state, made the appeal on Wednesday in an interview in Calabar. According to Baba-Gombe, the land if allocated will put an end to the crisis between herdsmen and farmers in the state. He said that the land would help the herdsmen to stop encroaching into people’s farmlands in search of food for their animals. He said that one of the main challenges facing herdsmen in the state was a grazing land, hence the need for the state government to come to their aid. “We use to instruct our people to always ask for permission before entering into any land to graze. “If I were to be a farmer, I won’t be pleased if any cattle come along to destroy my crops. “If a grazing land is provided, the animals would not stray into farms and this would further prevent any future crisis between herdsmen and farmers in the state. “All we are appealing for is a grazing land that is different from the farmlands; this would help us to stop encroaching into people’s farmlands in search of food for our cattle. “We have also sensitised our people to always have a good understanding with their host communities’’, he said. He further said that herdsmen in the state were tired of moving their cattle from one place to the other in search of food for them, hence the appeal for a reserved land for them. If at all Ayade would give in to their plea they must be restrictions with a well drafted and renewable agreement signed and sealed by both parties. Cus these guys are not loyal. |

I think the governor should think twice. If you give a Fulani man an inche, he takes a yard. Southerners can't give u free land to graze. Baba gombe beef is not free. An hour indigenous company should set up ranch and the herdsmen pay for the land use. No no no I fear the fulanis have betrayed trust of southerners. From Agatu to Enugu to taraba and so on. |

Appeal to el-rufai.... (gov of kaduna state) Am from Cross-river state, Please grant me land for farming, i promise to respect my host and not cause trouble as i have some tomato seeds but dont know where to plant.. each time i try to encrouch in other people farm, it brings about trouble. Please grant me free land to farm my crops.. Thank you in advance.. If what i wrote sounds silly to you, then stop making sentimental remarks on this thread.. Beef is not Free... its N1,300/kg of fillet steak. How many kg is a medium cow. Cow head is about N30,000 for a medium head alone. We have quantum number of unemployed graduates from cross-river whom the govt is yet to cater for through any means even with land for farming. |

Nonsense! They should bring out money or take out loans and lease land, sign proper agreement and set up a ranch, get it registered with CAC and pay due taxes. That is a civilised way of conducting business. No more freeloading and trespass. |

sanandreas:Animal husbandry is one of the most profitable businesses in the economy. These herdsmen don't pay salaries, overhead, nor taxes. Pure profit for every cow sold or slaughtered. By the time you sell 20 to 30 cows in any period of time, shouldn't an honest business person, cow herder or otherwise, be Able to buy plots of cheap land in rural areas with which to house and expand their business? ![]() Why do some people or group have a born-to- privilege or born-to-exception mentality ? It is this mindset that creates tensions and problems all over the country. Like you pointed out, BEEF IS NOT FREE in Nigeria. Why shouldn't people engage in the business of animal husbandry, cow herdsmen, etc, be expected and encouraged to invest in their own business , their own source of livelihood ? ![]() |

For where? Laye! These guys are itinerant in nature, and must continue thus if they must ply their trade. That's just a move to secure lands for themselves throughout the country. Have u imagined what would happen to the reserve after grazing the area, be it rainy or dry season? Would they leave it fallow for sometime?- If yes, where do they graze during such period? I guess they'll still move to greener areas! Ranches will certainly be the solution if such move should be considered. Cattle rearing is a legitimate form of agriculture, same as farming. The herdsmen should buy land, obtain a C of O, pay taxes, and rear their animals. If they decide to relocate, they will replicate same process there, just like anyother businessman! beejaay: |
