This question came up amidst discussions yesterday with a group of friends but unfortunately no concrete definition of both was given to satisfy me. Even the dictionary kind of confused me a lil bit more. Since they are not synonyms, there must be a difference between them and I'm hoping you guys will help me out. If possible add example(s) to your answer. Thanks |

LEERICIST:famous means you are known for a particular deed and cannot be forgotten or once you are famous everyone knows either through new, history e.t.c E.g that late gowon was really famous Popular means you are just known and can be forgotten or a person can indicate someone popular which people mightnt see that the so called person is popular E.g please janet do you know of the popular man mr johnson |

When one is famous, it is for a particular reason, like being known for something, I guess. But popularity is on a general note. For example, Lagos is popular, but Obudu is famous, something like that. |

A FAMOUS RESTURANT: Is well known. The name of the restaurant is recognized, perhaps because a well-known chef founded it, or it advertises a lot, or a well-known event occurred on the premises. A POPULAR RESTURANT: It's usually busy. The majority of people enjoy eating there. Or maybe they don't, but they go there because the food is cheap, or it's the "place to be." Outside of the people that eat there, it may or may not be well known. A restaurant can be both famous and popular (everyone knows about the restaurant, and many of them go there), or popular but not famous (only the people that frequent the restaurant know of it), or famous but not popular (making it infamous). |
