A case where phone makers deliberate set out to rip off the wallet of Nigerians with juicy marketing, only to make a U-turn and do what they ought to do in the first instance. What do I mean? Now, I have seen a couple of phone makers make a certain phone with 1GB RAM, and then 3-months later, they release the same phone with 2GB RAM and add appellations like “Plus, Max, Pro” at the end of the original name. These OEM’s have no “trade-in” policy, they deliberately want Nigerians to dump their new phone and purchase the same phone with a re-branded name. Ouch!

For other phone makers, they make the two variant, 1GB RAM and 2GB RAM, release only the 1GB version in Nigeria and send the two 2GB version to Kenya and UAE because those countries have a government – This is fraud!

The United States has a regulatory body called FCC that checks the quality and authenticity of phones coming into their country. Even the highly rated Xaiomi had a tough time entry the U.S market because of the standards the Chinese OEM had to meet.

Over here in Nigeria, the Standard Organization of Nigeria and NCC allows anything into Nigeria, as if our dear country is dumping ground for some of these phones that should be destroyed at the shores of Nigeria.

I earlier decried the so-called Yezz Mobile Jumia wanted to flood into the market, I am glad the brand was dead on arrival. There are other OEM’s who have established their brand in Nigeria, but now take us for granted with their bizarre business policy – This is fraud, it is dumb and delusional.

It’s even more disheartening that some OEM’s create phones without parts and accessories. They don’t want to offer repair services even when they know their stuff is inferior, they want you to keep buying the same sh!t with the money they don’t deserve.

some people do not understand how these things work.

Nigeria Government should be the one regulating these people through the help of SON but no, everybody is busy looting the money and collecting bribes thereby turning Nigeria to a dumping ground

I read some peoples comments saying "don't come here to complain cuz they didn't force you to buy". Do you even know the work of a government? Their primary objectives is the protect the interest of the people.

Bottom line, consumers are hungry and if you market anything to them, they will buy it. These people are like Physicians and consumers are like patients, so tell me, will a patient refuse what his doctor tells him? Don't you know that if medical profession are not at least merely regulated, they will prescribe anything to their patient just to make more money and they will buy it.

Imagine the government let cocaine and other hard drugs flood the market, they will market it well and almost every citizen will try it out and guess were Nigeria will be then.....

Regulation is the key. And how they hail do they allow these substandard products in Nigeria and yet they don't have service stations in the country. This is the height of hypocrisy.

The iPhone is probably locked to foreign network like Verizon or at & t. Let me know if you have intentions to sell it.
laprince:
As much as it is a fraud, I don't see any reason why I should dump my former phone for a new one without at least a good reason.

I have had an iPhone 6+ (a gift) for more than 9months now. I left it packed. Since I got it, does not pick network. So, I took it to some guys in computer village. They told me to bring 30k to update the software, so I can use it in Nigeria.

I just laughed and went to keep it in my wardrobe.

Why should I use all that money to work on the phone when I have a samsung galaxy that is in PERFECT condition? Good battery life and other things. And a steady nokia phone, for my second sim.

I don't like such wastage.

We nigerians know these phones. We know the best and the counterfeits. Since the producers sees the interest of nigerians on their product. They are mainly using business sense on us. Since majority of us can't buy Iphones, Ipads I think its better we stick to our counterfeit phones. because our government won't take action same as we the masses too. Just keep using the products with care.

Part of the problem is we buy the latest gadget without asking about after service or doing a little research on the product we intend buying.

Don't buy a phone because you saw a friend with one and felt intimated, and carried away on impulse, do your research on it.

If you buy your device after doing due research, you won't be tossed to and fro by the winds of product changes by the manufacturers.

As our SON is more interested in politics than product Safety and quality, it behooves us to verify the quality of what we intend buying through online customer reviews.

A premium quality phone can still meet ones communication and media needs years after. grin

Well, BlackBerry Z10 is not the best phone out there, but it has served me well 3 years and counting. grin

I bought the Z10 after thorough research, its only short coming was/is battery life, which I was aware of before buying and is not much of an issue with my mobile power bank.

Typical oversabi Nigerian response. They do not seek to fix anything rather they blame their own people for the actions of others. This brother is educating people who do not know to warn them and make us demand better service but nope, the typical Back stabbing and betrayer of their very own race Negros will surely come out to defend the master. In the years gone, your kind is known as a "house Nigger"

By not spending money to buy these phones Nigerian market can force these manufactures to do better.
Its same with every other product, they send lowest quality to Nigeria and send the best to countries whose leaders are interested in doing their jobs. Making sure things happen as it should.
Even airliners send their shittiest planes to fly African destinations. But that is what our leaders have reduced us to. They have made us the bottom feeders of the word

You are quite right but do not forget that they produce these cheap phones to meet buyer's purchasing power.

If these chinese manufacturers increase the phone's ram to say 3GB, with metal body and finish, Gorilla glass 3 or 4, snapdragon cpu with either adreno or mali GPU coupled with all the bells and whistles of high end phones, how many Nigerians would be able to afford it?

Sorry but they sell substandard phones to you guys because that is what the people can afford.

When the people are ready to pay more, they would get higher quality phones.

I mean do you expect a phone of S5, Nexus or iPhone quality for 24000 naira? Be realistic please.

I believe Nigerians like quality and they would pay a bit more for it. Nigerians would not mind paying the extra if the product is worth it.
Other factors that I see influencing the trend is the govt fees and other expenses the country places on the manufactures for their goods to be allowed into the country. In the end, this affects the price or the quality. If they can't increase price uneccesarily then they reduce the quality to make it up.

The greatest culprits are the online shopping sites who help with the procurement, advertising, sales and distribution of these substandard products.

I bought a TV for my old folks on Konga and about 8 months after use, it suddenly went blank. Unfortunately, it was past its warranty period and Konga sold me an electronic product from a company without a service Company in Nigeria.

As for Standards Organisation of Nigeria, those ones are busy playing Candy Crush in their offices. Buhari should just transfer all of them to go and plant tomatoes in Kebbi.

This is the major problem I am having with electronic products in Nigeria. Buy a gadget and later discover there is no service center for it. It's so bad.
That's why I ensure that any phone or higher gadgets am buying must have a service center for repair.
