Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal and Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Saad Abubakar Tuesday flagged off sales of fertilizer for 2016 cropping season in Sokoto state.

Speaking at the event, which took place at Silami LGA, Tambuwal announced that the state government has subsidized the cost of commodity by 70 percent to enable farmers enhance production.

He said the government has procured three types of fertilizers which include Urea, NPK and SSP brands.

“This year, Urea brand, bought by the government at N6859, will be sold to farmers at the price of N2,300; NPK, which was procured at the cost N6,400, will be sold at the rate of N2,200 while SSP, also bought at the rate of N6,400, will be sold to our farmers at the rate of N2,100,” the Governor said.

Tambuwal added that is administration would not relent on efforts to improve agriculture.

According to him, government has also procured 19,620 bags of rice seeds of 50kg size to be distributed to rice farmers for the 2016 wet and dry season farming.

“In the same vein, certified seeds of onions and lettuce have been sourced for distribution to vegetable farmers in Goronyo, Rabah, Wurno, Kware, Tambuwal, Wamakko, Silame, Kebbe, Sokoto North and Shagari LGAs,” he added.

Tambuwal said government will continue to explore avenues to enhance water management especially for the two major dams in the state, in order to mitigate flooding and its negative consequences, and at the same time improve wet and dry season farming.

About 9,000 metric tones of fertilizer was procured by the government for the 2016 cropping season.

The North does not joke with agriculture, and the availability of sufficient affordable fertilizer is vital to achieving the desired level and quality of output.

Meanwhile some people are foolishly bombing themselves back to the 19th century and polluting their farms, rivers and aquifer in the process.

Kudos to Tambuwal.

We can now see why the north doesn't want to let go of Niger delta oil, even their so called agriculture is HEAVILY dependent on oil money.

Building and maintenance of irrigation dams - oil money.
Provision of subsidised fertilizers - oil money.
Provision of machineries - oil money.
Distribution of improved seedlings - oil money.
Financial grants and loans to farmers - oil money.

The north will just be another Senegal or Niger republic without oil money to sustain its agriculture

Did Senegal or Niger have ever come to Nigeria begging for food?
Everyone needs one another to survive, can you eat your oil? Niger Delta can not survive alone without food, north can survive without oil with the abundant of food at their disposal
Google Saudi Arabia food ish, they import everything including water, a litre of water is costlier than a liter of petrol in Saudi, so they give out oil in exchange of food, they can survive without food but their suppliers can survive without (their) oil .
...so we need one anorher

Good. This is reasonable, the govt should do something that has a long term benefit. Unlike some who go about distributing bags of rice.

Good, Agriculture has a major role to play in Nigeria economy development. Apart from an increase in government revenue, its also a major source of employment and supplier of surplus labour. This sector is a major source for supplier of labour force to industrial sector due to farm mechanization. In this way an increase in the income of the people leads to improved standard living

Senegal is much better than the North today. Life expectancy and literacy levels in the North are amongst the worst in the world.

Without Niger Delta oil the North would resemble the Central African Republic.

How about we Southerners with all that education who use oil money to just import...instead of making more money by spending more on industrial development.? And innovation.

We may own the oil money...but we are no better than the North when it comes to using it. And we even drive away the investors by our mindless blowing up of pipelines.

Time we in the South....and the North too....grew out of resource dependency.....and took the hard road to self reliant innovative economics.

Modified: With all that oil money we should have dozens of industries in the South making things from oil rigs to android phones. Instead...we just use the oil money to import. Even if we had total control of the oil money....we would just waste it importing and importing.

My point eventually is that Nigeria can be more prosperous if we became industrial. That would enable us to export things whose prices we can control to our advantage....and spend less on imports....meaning that we do not have to worry about how much foreign exchange we have in the savings.

This is the lie southern leaders have told us in the past.. .. Hausas take 90% of our oil money That's y we can't perform

Bayelsa has the capacity to feed Nigeria with RICE and PLANTAIN why don't they use there own oil well to do dat
And don't tell me ur land us polluted because not upto 2% of farm lands are polluted

Envy ans laziness is the problem of the typical Ijaw man
Akwa-Ibom has far more oil than bayelsa and Rivers yet they farm
Aniomas have more oil than ijaws, yet they farm.. . Don't look for excuse go and work

See sentiment! This exactly is what the complain is, you use money generated from the Niger delta resource (oil) to buy fertilizer for the north to do their own resource (agriculture) which the proceed go to their private pocket and not federal government account.
Where is fairness in this?
