Hundreds of street sweepers on Monday protested at the head office of the Calabar Urban Development Authority in Calabar with bonfire against the non-payment of their five-month salaries. The workers, comprising mainly women, rebuffed the attempt by the CUDA to pay only one month of the five-month salaries.

The aggrieved workers, who made bonfire with tyres, defied teargas and warnings by riot policemen to disperse them from the entrance of the agency. CUDA is an agency under the Cross River State Ministry of Environment responsible for waste evacuation in Calabar. Unfortunately, major streets of Calabar had in the last few months been dotted with heaps of refuse. One of the aggrieved sweepers, Lucy James, said they had not been paid for the five months, lamenting that the agency made things worse by laying off some of the workers without payment. She further disclosed that the renewed protest of Monday was in continuation of an earlier one which started last Friday, adding that the sweepers were against the decision of the management of CUDA to force the workers to accept one month salary.

She said, “We have not been paid in the last five months when they engaged our services. They are fond of doing this. Each time our salaries accumulate, they will lay us off without payment. They called us here for payment for one month salary. We will not accept it.

“They ordered police to disperse us with teargas but we have resisted it. If they want to lay us off, they should first pay what they owe us. They have laid some of our colleagues off and about four of them have died without being paid. We cannot give the government ultimatum, but we are appealing that they pay us our salaries.”

Another aggrieved worker, Imoh Etuk, lamented that despite the cut in salary from N20, 000 to N18, 000, the state government was still unwilling to pay. “We all have families to cater for. Before now, our salary used to be N20, 000 but it was reduced to N18, 000 and because we have passion for our state we continued to work. They will not find it funny if we do not get our salaries,” he said. The Executive Secretary of CUDA, Mr. Joe-Mary Eteng, who was around to appeal to the workers, said the problem of accumulated arrears arose from the backlog of money, owed previous contractors handling various aspects of the agency’s project.

While appealing to the workers to accept the one month salary made available, Eteng, promised that other months would be paid shortly. “Today, we brought one month salary and appealed that subsequent ones would be paid soon, but they rejected it. This is actually a backlog of money owed previous contractors whose contracts were terminated when Governor Ben Ayade came in. Nobody is saying that they will not be paid,” he said.

So so unfair. It's really bad for a sweat of a worker to dry before receiving his/her salary. In this case, it has over dried sef. Our first problem in this country is that those at the top do not fear the wrath of God at all. May God forgive us all and give those in power the mind to do good..
God bless Nigeria and Nigerians.

It's absurd to be owing this callibre of people their wages. Politicians should always remember God when they are promising masses. All these flamboyant thanksgivings in church and mosque are not the best way to reach out to God. The best way is to the poor Workers and see how God will elevate you.

Our politicians areConsulting babalawos at the backstage and organising thanksgiving ceremonies in churches and mosques. Diaris Goodu o
