WARRI—GOVERNOR Ifeanyi Okowa of Delta State, has said the impact of the renewed destruction of oil assets in the state producing environment has gone so bad that the state is now unable to pay salaries regularly anymore.

The governor, yesterday at the Government Office Annex, Warri, where he convened a stakeholders meeting on, “Creating A Peaceful Atmosphere for the Development of Delta State and the Niger Delta Region,” said: “The larger Nigerian government has been in financial crisis over dwindling oil prices. Increased production would have helped cushion the impact but instead we are faced with destruction of oil assets.

“Dealing with dwindling oil prices and destruction of oil assets, we are now producing just half of our quota. And we are all really worried because of the greater effect is on Delta State. Before now we receive up to N20 billion monthly, but what we have now is so low. Last time we got N3.4 billion. Last month what we received has dropped to N3 billion. We now get 1/7th of what we use to have.”

The governor said, going by the current financial position, the state was no longer in a position to pay salaries regularly just as Internally Generated Revenue, IGR, has also nosedived.

“We met a wage bill of N7.4 billion. Our workforce has been unchanged. With biometrics and rationalization, we trimmed that to about N6.8 billion. With the situation, we have in our hands, we are not in position to pay workers regularly anymore.

“If we produce our normal volumes, we won’t have it this bad. We have had to reduce support to the councils. And apart from poor income from Federation Account, IGR has also gone down because money is not circulating.

“I do know that we were receiving reasonable Pay As You Earn, PAYE of up to N1.5bn and N1.6bn monthly. That has gone down. We should realise there’s a challenge. Political office holders, traditional rulers should build peace. Delta State has been on the news for the wrong reasons and that’s not where we want to be,” Okowa added.

We understand that truly, the militants' activities have dwindled the allocation of each State and also reduce the IGR in Delta state as a member of the Niger delta states which is the center of the militants' atrocities.

The question now is has this destruction of assets by militants reduced the salaries and allowances of this governor?

The FG have failed in their duty of protecting the oil pipelines. The result is the grounding of the economy.

And they're the same people protecting those marauders. Okowa, for an example, is a right hand man of Tompolo the devious and crooked man who has been bombing pipelines and at the same time writing letters to the president to protest his "innocence". The traps shall surely catch them.

More like Tompolo writing letter to Tompolo, and replying to Tompolo. cheesy

BTW,
Before now we receive up to N20 billion monthly
what have they done so far with all that?

That's the bigger question. Delta hasn't been lucky to have performing governors like Rivers, Cross Rivers have had in the persons of Amaechi and Donald Duke/Liyel Imoke.

Lots of innocent people have been caught up in this shii.. It's them I feel so sorry for.

Support evil all you want, but those who really matter and their wards will never get caught up in the crossfire. Na you wey never see food chop go suffer am!

You that are so progressive, how come you are letting out this wail of frustration over Nigeria's matter?

How much quota have you contributed to growing your immediate community?

It makes no sense using resources produced by 8-10 states to spoon feed 26 other states. angry

Delta state has 3 power plants but yet no light in Asaba ...

It doesn't make sense to continue suffering and sweating to power, oil and gas and receive peanuts or nothing....

while other states who don't even know what gas flaring is like or how farm lands are rendered worthless is pipelines are laid in it.... Are receiving free monthly allocation without breaking a sweat.

Until fiscal federalism or regionalism... Dey should bomb everything to 0.0 barrels per day.

Rubbish country angry

grin haha this is just the beginning. I thought the IPOB yoots supported the militants because they believe only the SW and North will feel the pain. Keep bombing and please intensify the bombings so the crude oil production will drop to zero. Lets see if Niger delta will eat crude oil when the whole economy is grounded. We all suffer the impact of the senseless bombings irrespective of our tribes and region.

By their comments we shall know those opposed to the growth of this nation.

Shame on you. you should just cover your head in shame. Is this not you that said ND are fighting a just cause? Even though you admitted the activities of ND is affecting the host communities. Now you blame the FG for the attrocities of the ND militants. What sense does that make to you as a sophisticated homo-sapience living in 2016.

SeverusSnape:
Thanks to Buhari's high-handedness and undiplomatic nature, A very obstinate man.

The activities of the militants are not only affecting the host communities but also the whole country at large, But at the end, They shall all benefit; The government has no choice than to dialogue with them, I think they are fighting for a just cause.

Why are you complaining after using them for election.
Some of them are even commissioners, senior special assistants and personal guards in your
government.
Your government is paddy-paddy government.
Did you nominate any political appointee without approval of Tompolo.
Oga governor, don't deceive us,we are not fools
