Serena Williams Steps It Up To Batter Beck At Wimbledon. by oyewoleabiola21(op): 5:04pm On Jul 03, 2016
Serena Williams showed signs of her top form at Wimbledon with a dominant 6-3 6-0 battering of Annika Beck to complete a 300th Grand Slam win.The dismal British weather over the past week meant there were matches played at SW19 on the middle Sunday of the tournament for the first time since 2004, and those in attendance on Centre Court witnessed a vintage Williams display.

Christina McHale took an out-of-sorts Williams the distance in round two, but the defending champion - who is seeking to equal Steffi Graf's Open Era record of 22 grand slams - had no such problems against Beck. The 34-year-old rarely had to get out of second gear and the majority of her 14 unforced errors came in a sloppy start that saw Beck take an early lead, but the world number 43 was never really in the contest. Williams initially struggled to find her rhythm as a double fault and a skewed long forehand gifted Beck break point, which was dispatched after the German got good depth on a forehand.

But the American quickly shifted through the gears and a series of brutal ground strokes earned the chance to break back immediately, a Beck double fault restoring parity. Beck's serves became noticeably slower, allowing Williams to dictate the rallies and in no time the world number one had won three straight games to lead 4-2. Williams served out the opener at the first time of asking with a huge ace, and the unforced error count continued to rise for Beck, who was broken in game one of the second set. For Beck it was now a case of trying simply to cling on as Williams mixed up her game, a stunning forehand winner down the line bringing up a double-break 3-0 lead.

Sadly for Beck the barrage of Williams attacks did not relent and the second-set bagel looked a formality when she was broken for the third time in the set. And Williams served it out to complete the win in just 51 minutes to set up a fourth-round tie with Russian Svetlana Kuznetsova.
