The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee has announced the names of legal practitioners who made it into the rank of the Senior Advocate of Nigeria ( SAN ) for 2016Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) is a title that may be conferred on legal practitioners in Nigeria of not less than ten years’ standing and who have distinguished themselves in the legal profession. It is the equivalent of the rank of Queen’s Counsel in the United Kingdom, from which Nigeria became independent in 1960 (Republic 1963), as well as in South Australia, the Northern Territory, and Canada (except Ontario and Quebec).

Several countries use similar designations such as Senior Counsel, State Counsel, Senior Advocate, and President’s Advocate. A Senior Advocate of Nigeria is said to have been admitted to the “Inner Bar”, as distinguished from the “Outer”, or “Utter”, Bar, consisting of junior advocates.

This current list is distinguished from others as only two persons where elevated to the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria. ( List of Newly Appointed Senior Advocates of Nigeria )

Report have it that Ebonyi State broke the age long curse by producing the first SAN from the state. He is Professor Omari Chukwu Omaka an erudite professor of Law and a former Dean of Faculty of Law, Ebonyi State University.

The name and details of the second colleague that attained the rank of Sanhood is still anonymous, all we have of him is that he is from Kano State Nigeria. Professor Omaka is known for his meekness, versatility and sound academic works in legal field especially in the areas of Environmental Law and Clinical and Legal education.
