The guards in the zoo ought to have tranquillizer gun/dart, instead of the Fire fighters oozing pressurized water at the Chimp. Nigeria, when will thou learn?

Tranquilizers are not risk free.

They should be used when access to the animal is almost guaranteed afterwards to help maintain its airway if not the animal could choke to death.

Sad indeed I really hope they don't put down the chimpanzee.

However, as for the lion they had little choice. You don't tranquilize dangerous wild animals that is in an area occupied by humans.
It is way too dangerous. The tranquilizer takes some time to kick in and during this period the animal tends to be erratic and often aggressive. That is when it is most dangerous.

Note that the gorilla in the US was put down. Recall the flooded zoo in Georgia the wild cats were all put down.

Do not shoot to kill but with a tranquilliser to incapacitate it, that is if you have the tranquilliser anyway.
