What Exactly Is Nigeria's Problem In Electricity Generation? by Nyceguy92(op): 12:56am On Jul 21, 2016
Could somebody, please, enlighten me as to why is it that Nigeria, The Giant of Africa, cannot generate, well, should I say, enough electricity for the masses.
The technology for power generation is not a hidden secret; it is not in the moon, so why are we behind even most African countries?

I don't know if it is true, but I have heard stories that certain interest groups had been blocking government efforts to improve power supply.
Can a few individuals be more powerful the the Federal or State government?

If the electricity situation was better decades ago, why is it getting worse in the 21St century?
Does anybody have an idea what should be done...?

I feel sad paying those huge electricity, sorry, wire retainership, bills every month!

Buy inverters then. Most people I've heard use them experience 24 hour electricity.
Honestly I feel its a three fold problem: cost, corruption and saboteurs. The government is too incompetent to handle saboteurs, we've seen this in the handling of boko haram, Niger Delta Militancy and now the NDA so its not new to write them off in security issues. Rumours are rife where I live of gas and oil workers who resort to continuously paying off riff raffs and community touts to ensure the safety of pipes passing through their land.
Corruption is a normal thing in Nigeria. Friends of mine who served with NEPA some years back noticed funds budgeted for electricity is first shared among men at the top(FG level) then Directors, Deputy Directors and finally managers of which by the time it reaches the workers on the ground who need it for field operations it's then too little to implement.
Cost. The cost issue, a little research into power generation would show the input of money into bettering the national grid would cost at least half if not more than half the national budget. In these dark economic times it would translate into rough play.Things are already hard talk less of trying to implement half of our budget into something which may take more than four years to achieve significant results. My only problem is our leaders are not truthful in the sense of educating the general public on important matters of this sort and always resort to lying every time.

One simple resson is because more elites in the country are going into the power generator business.

That was a very good analysis by you, charix.
I think at the head of it all is corruption plus lack of will on the part of the government.
If nothing is done, the situation will only get worse and we will never indusrialise.

I foresee solar energy taking over in the near future , but problem is the cost to the average Nigerian.
May God help us.

At the rate we're going it would reach a point where Nigerians who deem it a necessity and have sufficient funds would generate their own form of constant electricity either through the use of fuel and diesel generators, inverters or solar panels. We're still at the genesis of the trend, give it thirty more years.
Some families with minimal electricity consumption would choose to sell electricity to their neighbours. An example is a friend I once knew whose family purchased a personal transformer and decided to sell upconverted current to five neighbouring houses. The houses were made to pay N2,000 each to one of the man's sons which added up to N10,000 pocket money for the boy every month.

It is very possible.
I even read here on NL about some firm that is offering some kind of mortgage domestic and office solar energy system.
It comes in different KVA capacities that require some down payment and then fixed monthly payment till paid off.
Again, cost is the problem.
