NIGERIAN FACT FILE: ORIGIN OF THE SHORT SERVICE COMBATANT COMMISSION
(formerly Nigeria Emergency Commission)
1. The Nigerian Emergency Commission (later redesignated the Short Service Combatant Commission) kicked off in March 1967
2. The idea was to rapidly train cadets for 3months, with emphasis on serving NCOs and ex-boys of the Nigerian Military School(NMS)
3. Prior military training,it was hoped, would make up for the short duration of the training of NEC officer cadets

4. At the time,the Army’s officer corps had been badly hit by the exodus of Ibo officers back to Eastern Nigeria as civil war loomed
5. Both officer Corps & teeth arms alike (Infantry,Armour,Artillery,Signals & Engrs) had until 1966 been dominated by Ibo officers
6. The Nigeria Emergency Commission Course 1(later redesignated SSC 1) had a few famous cadets in that pioneer 1967 intake
6. One of them was Sgt Tanko Ayuba(a Maj Gen as of 1998) who left the NMS in 1961 & became a NCO as was customary
7. Another one was Sgt John Shagaya, who left the NMS in 1963 & was a Brig Gen as of 1993 when he retired from service
8. Shagaya served as Commander 9 Brigade, Minister of Internal Affairs, AFRC Member, ECOMOG Commander & GOC 1 Division
9. Another SSC 1 cadet was Sgt John Inienger, who like his classmate & coursemate Shagaya, also left the NMS in 1963.
10. Inienger was Commander 4 Brigade, Military Governor of BENDEL, AFRC Member, ECOMOG Commander & GOC 2 Division
11. To meet the exigencies of war,the SSC officers came in every 3 months and moved straight to the battlefield thereafter.
12. So SSC 1 got commissioned in Sept 1967 and plunged straight into battle as the Civil War had started on July 6th, 1967
13. The most famous SSC 2 officer is
Maj Gen Chris Alli, an Intel officer commissioned Dec 1967, who later became a Chief of Army Staff.
14. Mar 1968,SSC 3 turned out the likes of Brig Gen Ahmed Abdullahi(ex GOC 1 Div) & Maj Gen Alwali Kazir, who rose to be a COAS
15: SSC 4 had Lt Gen IR Bamaiyi (a former COAS), his elder bro Maj Gen Musa Bamaiyi, Brig Gens I.Sabo, I. Karmashe & Maj Gen Patrick Aziza

I'm new on this thread and I have an interest in joining the Army soon..I'm currently 22+ , finished from U.I a year ago, and I just commenced my NYSC programme. I have a B.Sc (Hons) in Econs with a 2.2 C.O.D... My question is, will I need to get an M.Sc to boost my chances? I know a 2.2 degree comes with a lot of competition. I plan on applying for the SSC immediately I clock 24.

when someone asks a question in this forum, then a 'bad bele' from nowhere comes in to run diarrhoea mouth.
this is freedom of thought and expression. so, if you got no answers or words of encouragement to a post, the sensible thing to do is just shut up, and stay in your lane, instead of constituting a public nuisance.
the university is not all about academic prowess. it's also a place for building character.
if you lack home training...at least, try to show that you passed through the University, even if the university didn't pass through you.

For some of us speculating when the list will come out or not, i suggest we take a look at the budget for the Nigeria Armed forces under defense ministry, in that budget you will see clearly that it is only the Nigerian Airforce that have Recruitment, Promotion and Appointment budgeted for. Am not saying that the list will not come out but as educated people we should understand that this things dont just happen, they are well organised and planned, so lets keep our arms crossed and wait on them.
